Kisumu Cotton Mills (KICOMI) and Rift Valley Textiles (RIVATEX) were Kenya's trailblazers in manufacturing cotton textiles and fabrics. KICOMI made Kisumu an essential hub for school uniforms. Indians had massive textile godowns like Impala Garments and Nyanza Garments, which made the micro-economy of Kisumu vibrant. KICOMI sustained the lives of cotton farmers in Siaya and Kisumu. It is KICOMI that inspired the Luo nation to be skilled tailors. RIVATEX supported thousands of cotton farmers in Kerio Valley, Baringo, and Pokot. Eldoret, apart from Kisumu, was the other hub of school uniforms serving the North Rift region. KICOMI and RIVATEX produced high-quality Kenyan fabrics that reflected our spirit and values as a nation. (See the pictures below.) RIVATEX even had a football club called Rivatex FC, which was the pride of Eldoret people. Rivatex FC was the first football club outside Nairobi to win the Moi Golden Cup in 1990. But today, KICOMI and RIVATEX collapsed. RIVATEX is currently under receivership after being looted by Moi University leadership. Families who relied on these industries, eg, tailors, sellers, farmers, and fashion designers, were all rendered destitutes. When these politicians tell you to design a national dress, ask them why our textile industries are dead. Senile boomers and X-generation buffoons have killed our dreams, aspirations, and future.
