Nectarius is astroturfed for an English translation English tradition is to use the Greek transliteration not the Latin. That is why it’s Odysseus and not Ulysses in English. Or Photios and not Photius But both Anglo-american and western Latin cultures are cargo cults to them

@Perioigoy English is so Greek that if you were given a class on English words, their origins, their parts, and their roots you would be able to pick up and understand most of an orthodox theology book without any other context. If you want to get away from that then learn Old English.

@Perioigoy Yeah but in principles the "under Pontius Pilates" is the same idea as "In the Consulate of X" or "in the 2nd year of the Yth olympiad"

I’m tired of people not trying to grasp cultures of antiquity Suffering under Pilate doesn’t implicate his guilt, old civilisations didn’t have unified calendars and counted time from who was ruling at what time. It’s a timestamp that anchors Christ as a historical person.
Sami Gold@souljagoyteller

@No5mallf3at Why do the early creeds always mention that Christ was killed by Pilate then?

@lapalemort Issue it likely would have been too precise for the time, there were already debates about the exact year of birth of Christ back then. It would also have been too associated with paganism, and also the creed sought to only employ words that were already in scripture.

@Perioigoy That would be fun if our Creed mentionned the olympiad or the consulate

@CozyOomfie The fathers and even second temple Jews talk of Alexander as a prophetic or providential figure for that reason. There would have been no Christianity without the Hellenistic world in the eastern Mediterranean and the gospel only could be that peaceful thanks to Pax Romana.

@Perioigoy God called people from all nations, but there's a reason he called the Jews and then the Romans first. For all the talk about White civilization standing on the shoulders of Christianity, it's equally true that the Church stands on the shoulders of the White man.

@CozyOomfie That’s also why it caught on with the civilised barbarians so well, because they already were part of the Roman commonwealth. And why raw nigvangelism can never go beyond « Jesus is the chieftain of my cannibal rapetribe »

@CozyOomfie The more I dive into this, the more I believe that if you’re not European or at least an inheritor of classical culture, you can’t fully be a Christian like the fathers were. Pax Romana and Hellenistic society is as important to the gospel as the temple is, even as a background.
