@MuseZack In the 1958 noir, The Lineup (worth watching, great SF locations) the final shoot-out is on the yet-to-be completed Embarcadero Freeway. Good use of the ugly thing.

The original Philip K. Dick novel of Man in the High Castle has a funny sequence where the cultured Japanese consul from Axis-occupied San Francisco briefly goes to our world and is horrified by the ugly sight of the Embarcadero Freeway. Funny that it's gone in this world too.

This is a great book and, mostly for the better, barely about Caesar. It’s about early egalitarian movements and how Roman elites violently blocked redistribution, justifying it as a defense of republican order. Elites haven’t changed much. RIP Michael Parenti.
