It’s a tragedy that we are allowing our universities and research capacity to wither due to lack of funding and a determined effort to deter international students. Good jobs are being lost. Once lost, capacity will be hard to rebuild. To what benefit? ft.com/content/ded7df…

The financialisation of education was one of the worst mistakes this country has ever made. An educated population makes the country a better place. Only those who want to control you want you uneducated.

@DebateHazel Looks like what’s happening to the independent sector. Few 🌹shed tears about that. Time to thin out the economically hopeless degrees.

@suttontrust The ‘drama’ sector employs 250,000. Each year there are 50,000 - 60,000 drama graduates. Time to reduce the number of places where there is no possibility of employment and saddled with debt the state (tax payer) ends up paying.

The barriers that are limiting access to the creative industries are entrenched. To build a system that fairly reflects the diversity and talent across the UK, we need changes across the education pipeline, as well as action from creative employers. suttontrust.com/our-research/a…

💬 "The Sutton Trust found only 10% of writers are from working-class backgrounds." Getting to the top of the creative industries is a dream for many talented young people in our country. But access to these careers is far from equal ⬇️ bbc.co.uk/news/articles/…

I really disagree with people at the DfE getting bonuses meanwhile some schools are struggling to pay their bills, lots of headteachers are actively trying to prevent teachers getting on to UPS or avoiding employing UPS teachers for financial reasons.

Who comes up with these crackpot ideas? Paying parents to not sabotage their children’s future? It’s just a sticking plaster on a wound that needs surgery, which is the broken benefits system. It just adds another layer of complexity and would be politically toxic.

@suttontrust Probably help if 27.4% didn’t leave school without a Level 2 in English despite their education costing the taxpayer £100,000+!

@PeterTCross @Sum1st Have a read of the article Peter - I break down how the repayments for plan 2 student loans work - it’s quite different to a traditional bank loan

The student loan system hits students from working class backgrounds the hardest My degree will cost me twice as much as my classmates whose parents could afford to pay the fees upfront - it's a life changing difference

@Sum1st The article explains how the loan isn’t the same as a traditional loan like the one you’d get for a car

'They fail, they give up, they leave and then can't get a good job.' A quarter of adults don't have their maths and English GCSEs, and caller David's experience as a teacher in a sixth form college has led him to the conclusion the system needs to be completely reformed.
