What are you talking about? I grew up in the 80s/90s and I lived on soda. My parents didn't give a fuck. I probably had Coke before mother's milk.

Yes. Soda was a luxury until the mid-2000s. It was something you'd have for family movie night on Fridays and birthdays. Prior to the ~90s, it was even more rare. Drinking soda with every meal wasn't normal until fairly recently. It is a small luxury but a luxury.

Germany also, for some reason, sells “American hot dogs” in glass jars filled with water? not in the fridge?? i’ve literally never seen them like this in the US ever, this is a German invention.
