@LindseyGalboMS I remember really disoriented and tired yet never sleeping somehow. And stopped going to new grad student lunches. I was too grumpy.

My favorite sound will forever be a collective “ohhhhhh” of sudden understanding from a large group of people. It’s like hearing a puzzle piece clunk into place. The auditory reward of academia.

@mapofmyself @GrantHBrennerMD @autefeh As a woman in recovery, this is exactly my experience as well. I decline drinking events as I don’t want to be around drinking, once people start getting tipsy, I’ve lost all my patience and tolerance. I love a good soda water, but that doesn’t make the environment tolerable.

@MDinWaiting It’s unconscionable that in a field where disorders of mental health and substance use are notoriously high, self-disclosing the need for treatment is often punitive. Recovery is professionally detrimental, continuing the harmful behavior is just fine. The whole system is guilty.

In 2020, I implored my med school deans to take student suicidality seriously. I was told to focus less on advocacy. I was told students are so spoiled with benefits these days, what do they have to be depressed about. 2 months later the institution lost a student to suicide…

@ZJAyres My first conference as a 21-year old masters student was one room for 3 women and 1 man, one full sized bed, and a pull-out couch. It was… cramped, and what they were used to. After that, I stick to room-share squads, still together as PIs now! @CarolineEBass & @KathleenLEgan

Don't tell me that "breakfast will be served" at your event if you're planning to pick up bagels, cream cheese, and a bag full of clementines from Safeway. That's not breakfast, that's groceries. Words matter.

How soon should you leave a toxic workplace? As soon as you can—and sooner than you think. There's no amount of hazard pay that justifies feeling browbeaten and broken. Not every job is a source of joy and meaning, but your work shouldn't cost you your health and well-being.

@KDigsTheWorld @td_dion Buffalo resident here to confirm! I’m in the village on the outskirts of the city and within 3-4 blocks of me have restaurants, bus line, library, post office, farmers market, about 4 churches running alternate day AA meetings. My mortgage is less than 1K a month! 🦬

@td_dion Come to Buffalo. I live in a 3,500 sf 5bed/2ba house with a garage and a little back yard for $1,400/mo. Two blocks from the subway and grocery store. A former city rail line has been converted to off-road paved trails and we can get anywhere in the city without a car.

I just wanna live somewhere I can get a cute little apartment and be able to walk to a grocery store, park, church, and rapid transit station. 100 years ago that was standard in every American city. Today, it’s a luxury experience that costs $2000+/mo

Six years ago, I shared publicly that I’m in addiction recovery. I was years sober at the time, physically healed but my world still felt so isolated & small. The last six years of being open about sobriety have been the greatest yrs of my life. A full life. Full of connection.
