@implausibleblog Tories believe their mistake was Major stabilising the economy only for Blair & Labour to benefit from it. They know the next election is lost & so are busy ensuring Labour inherit an absolute mess. Making ££ for their mates while they're at it. @MarinaPurkiss @campbellclaret

Barnsley FC On This Day in History
On this day in 1998, after relegation from the PL and a dispute about wages, the brilliant @neil_redfearn8 left Barnsley and signed for Charlton Athletic for £1m. Since joining in Sept '91, ‘Redders’ had made 338 appearances and scored 83 goals for the Reds. He was top scorer in both the '96/97 promotion season with 19 and '97/98 PL season with 14. Redfearn left Charlton after just one season and joined Bradford City, again in the PL. #BarnsleyFC #NeilRedfearn #CAFC

@Steve2015649681 Barnsley FC must navigate a tighter transfer market following a reduction in post-Brexit visa allocations, which has cut the number of Elite Significant Contribution (ESC) slots available to League One clubs from two down to just one.

Reports from Australia suggest Barnsley are closing in on Newcastle Jets winger Clayton Taylor. The 22-year-old has emerged as one of the A-League's brightest young attacking talents and is understood to have agreed a three-year deal with the Reds following the expiry of his contract with Newcastle Jets. Taylor enjoyed an impressive 2025/26 campaign, scoring 9 goals and registering 4 assists in just 23 appearances, earning recognition as an Australia Under-23 international and attracting interest from clubs across Europe. Capable of playing across the front line, Taylor is known for his direct running, creativity and eye for goal — qualities that would certainly add another dimension to Daniel Stendel's attacking options. Having made 72 appearances for Newcastle Jets across three seasons, this would represent a significant step in his career and potentially one of Barnsley's most intriguing additions of the summer. 👇 Would Clayton Taylor be a good signing for Barnsley? #BarnsleyFC #COYR #ALeague #Transfers #OakwellHub

Robert, I think you and much of the Westminster media are looking at this entirely from the wrong end of the telescope. The real issue is not whether ministers could nominate Andy Burnham whilst remaining in government. Nor is it whether Sir Keir Starmer would face a difficult political choice. The real question is what such a challenge would do to the Labour Party itself. For many members, this would be an existential moment. Sir Keir Starmer led Labour from opposition to government and delivered a landslide victory after years in the political wilderness. If, after barely two years in office, sections of the Parliamentary Labour Party sought to remove him, they should not assume that members and voters would simply accept it. The danger is not that Starmer loses authority. The danger is that Labour loses its coalition of support altogether. I have spoken to many members who make it clear that they did not join or remain in the party to facilitate an internal coup against a leader who won a General Election. Many would leave. Some say permanently. Once that trust is broken, it is exceptionally difficult to rebuild. Westminster often assumes that leadership contests are simply matters of parliamentary arithmetic. They are not. They are also matters of legitimacy, loyalty and public perception. The electorate tends to take a dim view of politicians who use one leader to secure power and then move against them once they have obtained office. If those advocating a challenge believe the public will applaud such behaviour, I suspect they may be making a profound miscalculation. The consequence may not be a stronger Labour Party under new leadership. It may be a fractured party, a collapsing membership base and the loss of support from voters who conclude that Labour has once again become more interested in itself than in governing the country. That is the risk. Not for Starmer, but for Labour itself.
Robert Peston@Peston

If Keir Starmer chooses to face Burnham in a leadership contest, it will all get very messy for him very fast. Because he will have to decide whether ministers can publicly endorse Burnham, as they will want to do, and keep their jobs. If he tells them the price of keeping their jobs is NOT to nominate Burnham, some - maybe many - will resign, and Starmer will preside over a re-run of the mass resignations that destroyed Boris Johnson at the end of his time as prime minister. Or so multiple Labour MPs are telling me. If he lets them keep their jobs while nominating him, any residual authority he has over them will evaporate: terrible look for him

@oakwellgrovest @The_Mannster Aye alright. And since January? And the whole team set up so poorly the CBs are isolated, the full backs so dysfunctional and no midfield protection. And this has been consistent all season no matter who he picks. We've conceded most in L1 cos we aren't organised

@Philg2012 @The_Mannster That's garbage, we didn't have one half decent CB with good efl experience until O'Connel came in January, Shepherd & MDG are a lg 2 standard pairing. We got to play off final with mads, kitching & thomas, Hourihane's defenders are a long way off these players.

The thing is who of any clout is going to come in and work under this shower of shite above them. Yes, CH has not covered himself in glory this season and it has been a baptism of fire, but he has the club at heart and I think he’ll do well in his next job given the right support

Barnsley Football Club and Conor Hourihane will mutually part ways at the end of the 2025/26 season. Following discussions between both parties, it was concluded that a change would be beneficial for both parties ahead of the 2026/27 campaign. Read more: barnsleyfc.co.uk/news/2026/apri…

@GabSutton Think Gab its a combination of Conor being given the job too soon, not surrounding himself with more experience and the Barnsley job being tougher than anticipated. I feel his coaching philosophy has hit L1 reality and he's not been sure how to adjust his methods

Big question mark for me is whether there's enough footballing nous upstairs at Oakwell to get this next appointment right. Neerav Parekh's background is in AI and data analytics, Jon Flatman's is in rugby and Julie Ann Quay's is in fashion. And of course, James Cryne isn't his father - he's his own man and he's exercised his perfect right to carve his own path by not having a full-time role at the club in addition to his stake (as far/recently as I know). With that in mind, I question whether there's enough footballing intelligence at the top. If you look at the clubs who have exceeded expectations in League One this season, they've all had it. Contrary to criticism from some quarters, I actually think everyone at board level and in senior positions at Barnsley are ambitious, and do want what's best for the club. At the same time, they need a more refined and consistent process for how to get there. Restructuring this summer is a must. #BarnsleyFC 🔴

@The_Mannster I agree he has the club at heart n it's sad it's not worked out. But I struggle to have faith he will improve when seen 6 months of tactics, set up and individual players going backwards. And no sign of Conor owning his own mistakes

@LeonWobYP Barnsley have been poor for 12 months under Hourihane and are getting worse by the week. He shows no signs of knowing how to set up a team, his in game tactics a d subs are repeatedly poor. And his selections of square pegs in round holes is the stuff of legend now!

@dougokane88 I think you sum it up perfectly here Doug: 'there is such a sloppiness about the team and so many regular errors by players who have been relatively solid elsewhere in their careers that you have to question the coaching and the overall approach to defending'.

Well I was wrong to dread it. Much better after the break, showed character which is bare minimum. But should have been buried at half-time. This team has some real attacking ability but defending costs them time and again. 72 goals conceded in all comps this season.

@joshathertonn I agree. In July he was certain that Okeefe wasn't a RB and MDG & Earl weren't CB's. Now look at us. I feel Conor's coaching ideas have hit something a brick wall with an average Barnsley L1 squad and he's scrambling round for ideas on how to correct it. Yet not finding any
