Boston isn’t even as Irish as people think it is, it’s 13% Irish, which is still sizable but nowhere near what it used to be. Most of the Irish community moved to the South Shore and Plymouth County. Boston is diverse. I think it has to do with the fact that the Scottish fans were here longer and because of that they were able to emerge themselves in the community more. The England fans are only here for the Ghana game.

@Polymarket i feel like the english are being treated much less hospitably than the scottish. its weird to me. tbh, it feels like "this is boston, we are irish here, and to assert our identity were going to show you we dont like you". feels like a bit of a larp if im honest

NEW: Boston bars reportedly closed early on England fans a week after the Tartan Army’s takeover of the city, with one pub posting: “Thankfully there’s nothing happening in Boston today.”

@GNCL1139 Rio de Janeiro is one of the most beautiful places on Earth. My great-grandfather left this region and settled in the Azores, where he eventually met my great-grandmother. There is still a Portuguese population there that is still genetically Portuguese.

I understand the need for additional funding—towns like ours are facing real cost pressures. But the situation here is very precarious. Berkley is a small town that’s already funding our local schools, including a new elementary school, plus contributing to a new vocational school in Taunton where only 20 to 30 of our students attend. With the Proposition 2½ override failing, we’ve now had to eliminate on-call EMS staffing for overnights. That directly impacts emergency response times for families like mine when seconds count. Hoping town leaders can find targeted efficiencies or other solutions so we protect critical safety services without overburdening residents. Buying a starter home is becoming a million-dollar problem. There are now 233 U.S. cities where even an entry-level home costs at least $1 million. Massachusetts now has 11 of them.

For homeowners with properties assessed at $500,000, the proposed override would have added approximately $2,553 per year to their property taxes. Many residents are already facing higher insurance premiums and rising utility costs. Adding another $2,553 in annual property taxes on top of those burdens is becoming unsustainable for many families. Town officials should focus on trimming unnecessary spending and prioritizing services for local taxpayers rather than expanding programs that strain the budget further.

@Phillip617 @OnlyInBOS It’s you who doesn’t understand basic economics. Prop 2.5 overrides are necessary - for hundreds of towns - exactly because of inflation outpacing 2.5 percent annually

@Phillip617 @JakeFitzsimons The Portuguese diaspora is around the 4% mark whereas the Irish diaspora is in the mid 20s, percentage wise, Irish is the largest diaspora by a large margin in Massachusetts

@kelticfuture @JakeFitzsimons Massachusetts is home to many immigrant diasporas — not just the well-known Irish community, which is quite large — but also a significant Portuguese diaspora that numbers the equivalent of 10–15% of Portugal’s total population.
