Today is #WorldChildrensDay - an opportunity to reflect on the important ideas and contributions children make to society. Only 1 in 5 told #TheBigAmbition they feel adults in power listen to them. Their voices are powerful - they need to be heard.

If our education system becomes more controlling (of both teachers and learners) and offers less in the way of agency and autonomy, then we really shouldn't be surprised if we see a fall in motivation and retention. 🤷‍♀️

seeing lots of start of term oracy initiatives which just appear to frame working class kids as linguistically deficient and requiring intervention #predictable

Not a *single* ref to +++ adverse experiences by global pandemic. Not a *single* expert opinion sought from clinical child & adolescent developmental expert or trauma & attachment expert. But *ex* DfE advisor gets lions share of column inches. 🤦🏻‍♀️ theguardian.com/education/arti…

From today the @educationgovuk ‘Working together to improve school attendance’ guidance becomes statutory in England. We have identified some key advice. We urge schools & local authorities to comply with the expectation that they use Support, Not Sanctions to improve attendance

Best way to encourage critical thinking...? Bringing democratic principals into the classroom! Children can learn to be active citizens, respecting all members of their community, by practicing those principals in school.

The best defences of our free and open society are those within us. Labour will work to make them stronger through encouraging critical thinking across education. independent.co.uk/news/uk/politi…
