Iran saw Saddam Hussein trounced by American air power. Knowing fully well that Americans will have full air dominance, Iranis prepared asymmetric warfare by going underground with missiles. This must've been a moment of pure brilliance! For the last 3 weeks, Iran has hit 1/2

@PurefoyAmebo After witnessing 70+ years of near-persistent warfare in the Middle East, I am fairly certain that the only way it ever stops is if the entire region is reduced to a “sea of glass”. I have no hopes of it ending any other way.

Will historians look back on 1978 as the birth of a new militant Persian empire and death of the empire of the “West” …? My take: we’ve just seen the explosion of a militaristic Persian empire across the Middle East. It could last a day or 200 years — and, either the rest of the world accommodates this new empire OR they try to destroy it *now* it in its infancy. My bet is most of the West — reports that NATO is coming up with a “plan” — does not understand (I think elements of US deep state and Israel do understand) the slippery slope we are now on. The Islamic Republic has exploded by threatening to take the entire Middle East down in flames unless they pay tribute of seeing them as the regional hegemon. Attempts by both sides to achieve escalation dominance of this critical global energy hub means that the West faces an enemy willing to take down the entire Middle East, and so all hell let loose on the rest of the world. This means that any attempt by the West will ultimately mean the complete destruction of Iran to prevent any power projection. But, of course, as we know from Hamas, Hezbollah, etc, it doesn’t necessarily work. It’s possible to have both the Middle East destroyed and a rump Iran surviving despite our strategy. The West faces a choice: a war as the Romans once fought, or take the knee. But either way, we will not be the same at the other end of this war. A new dark age beckons.
Christian Purefoy@PurefoyAmebo

I just finished reading the brilliant Fredrick the Great by Tim Blanning (on recommendation of @dcsandbrook 🙏) We’re not there yet but it’s a tale of an emerging great power surrounded by enemies who underestimate him and miscalculate their own strategy. 👀

The greatest danger the world faces is from an increasingly fanatical and utterly unhinged nuclear-armed Israel. The US doesn't see it clearly now because it does Israel's bidding - funding, arming and going to war for Israel - but that shouldn't be comforting. This is insane:
Shaiel Ben-Ephraim@academic_la

Israel has ordered that all civilians evacuate a zone of 25 miles from the Israeli border. The area includes 10% of the territory of Lebanon and is home to approximately 1 million people. The order is indefinite and will follow the model of Gaza where anybody who is in this area will be killed. This is de facto annexation and ethnic cleansing.

Imo, Iran knows the Strait of Hormuz is their primary negotiating weapon, and they want to retain full control over it. With every day, the pain for our Asian allies gets worse, and on average, the price for oil goes up, along with the prices for diesel & gasoline in the US. 1/
Neil McCauley@NeilMcCauley226

@SaysSimulation I think the real question is why haven’t the Iranians mined the strait. They declare it’s closed by rocketing ships that sail by, allowing the to reopen as a negotiating measure. But mining is different, irreversible, and requires months of minesweeping work we can’t support

In Trump's first term, he was the first president in decades not to involve the US in a new war. He ran on a campaign that denounced the Bush family and Cheney for a hideous foreign policy, talked about NATO being obsolete, working with Assad, etc. The Cheney win found Hillary/Kamala far more stable and reliable. Trump is still trying to stop the war in Ukraine, whereas Kamala would have funded it forever (like Biden). These things aren't binary. It's not like the whole Trump heterodoxy is either true or a fraud. It's always somewhere in the middle. But this has been quite a warmongering, neocon-pleasing year.

I actually didn't think it was possible to take one of the three major TV networks (even the lowly CBS) and, in prime-time, drag it down to the lowly ratings level of CNN, yet Bari Weiss -- in her first on-camera special -- managed to accomplish this remarkable feat.
Dylan Byers@DylanByers

NEW: Early numbers for Bari Weiss’s Erika Kirk town hall ain’t great… 1.5 million,* comparable to an average CNN town hall and down considerably from the Army-Navy game (7.3m) and post game (3.5m) that preceded it …. YouTube views around 100k *final # will tick up

My favorite part of CBS's aggressive promotion for Bari's prime-time special was how they had Bari walking around the newsroom breathlessly telling the camera that she had just spent a FULL HOUR with Erika Kirk - as though she had just scored some seemingly impossible historic exclusive with one of the most publicity-shy enigmatic stars on the planet (Greto Garbo spoke to us!), rather than a person who has been extremely visible in every media sector for 3 months straight.

One can make the argument that the US should have no role in Brazil. Other than censorship of Americans and US companies — which Moraes is doing — that’s my view. But once Trump beats his chest and imposes punishment on Brazil until it releases Bolsonaro and ends censorship, crawling away with nothing is weak and self-destructive.

Whatever you think of Lula, he is one of the shrewdest and most consequential world leaders of the 21st Century. In his third term, at age 78, he just gained one of his most spectacular victories, handing a huge defeat to Trump, the US and its sanctions regime. The US just withdrew all sanctions against Judge Moraes despite his escalating all the behaviors the sanctions were ostensibly designed to punish (censorship and imprisoning Bolsonaro for decades), while Lula still pursues BRICS and de-dollarization. Lula told the US to fuck off with its sanctions. And Trump just did. Brazil created a new model to defeat US sanctions: it implemented a law (via court ruling) barring its banks from adhering to US sanctions. It worked spectacularly. Trump just slinkered away after a trivial amount of flattery and charm from Lyla. Huge win for Lula and Moraes, major defeat for Trump State Department, US power and the Brazilian Right.
Ana Schaffert@AnaSchaffert

ALEXANDRE DE MORAES IS OFF THE MAGNISTKY SANCTIONS LIST. This is a hard pill to swallow. As a legal professional deeply invested in the principles of human rights and the rule of law, I am profoundly shocked and dismayed by the recent decision to remove Brazilian Supreme Court Justice Alexandre de Moraes from the Global Magnitsky Act sanctions list. This action, taken without apparent evidence of behavioral change or accountability, undermines the very purpose of the Magnitsky framework, which is designed to hold foreign officials accountable for serious human rights abuses, including the suppression of free speech and arbitrary judicial overreach. The Global Magnitsky Human Rights Accountability Act clearly stipulates that sanctions may only be terminated under specific criteria, such as when credible information shows the individual did not engage in the sanctioned activity, has been appropriately prosecuted, has demonstrated a significant change in behavior along with paying appropriate consequences and committing to cease such actions, or when termination serves U.S. national security interests. In this case, none of these conditions appear to have been met. Justice Moraes continues to preside over cases that have resulted in serious human rights abuses, including the prolonged arbitrary detention of individuals such as former Bolsonaro advisor Filipe Martins, who was held in preventive custody for months without formal charges in connection with alleged coup-related activities, amid allegations of flawed evidence and denials of fair trial guarantees—practices that directly echo the abuses cited in his original designation under the Global Magnitsky Act for arbitrary detentions and suppression of freedom of expression. This ongoing conduct, far from demonstrating any cessation of the sanctioned activities, raises serious questions about the integrity of the delisting process and whether it is being influenced by extraneous diplomatic or economic considerations rather than adherence to the law. Historically, removals from the Magnitsky list have been rare and contingent upon verifiable reform. For instance, Uzbekistani national Gulnara Karimova was removed after entering into agreements to forfeit billions in corruptly obtained assets and ceasing her involvement in the underlying schemes of corruption and human rights violations. Similarly, Latvian politician Aivars Lembergs was delisted following his criminal conviction and imprisonment for corruption, satisfying the criterion of appropriate prosecution and consequence. These precedents underscore that delisting is not a mere formality but requires concrete evidence of cessation and redress—elements conspicuously absent here. This decision not only risks emboldening similar judicial overreaches globally but also erodes trust in U.S. sanctions as a tool for promoting accountability. bloomberg.com/news/articles/…

It’s the same tired playbook. And for their next act? —They want him tried for war crimes. Yep—war crimes. They intend to prosecute another political opponent. They have lost it. Congressional Democrats are fueled by a radicalized Leftist base and are hellbent on power. The rules don’t matter to them. At all. Sound familiar?
