STUDY: STOOL TRANSPLANT - CURE FOR SYMPTOMS OF PARKINSON DISEASE? A recent study by Ghent University Hospital in Belgium reveals the potential of fecal microbiota transplantation (FMT) to alleviate symptoms in Parkinson’s disease (PD) patients. PD affects around 10 million people globally, with symptoms ranging from motor issues like tremors to non-motor symptoms such as constipation. The study, published in eClinicalMedicine, demonstrates that FMT could offer a new avenue for treating PD by targeting gut bacteria, which are believed to influence the disease progression. The trial, known as the GUT-PARFECT trial, involved early-stage PD patients receiving healthy donor stool transplants via a tube inserted through the nose. Results show significant improvement in motor symptoms after 12 months, indicating the potential of FMT as a viable treatment option.
