@wendyburn I had the x2 shingrex privately. The pharmacist said they thought it would never take off at that £££ but demand was huge - from people like me who had seen friends suffer with this awful virus. Beware the second one is a bear - schedule some recovery time!

Just had my shingles vaccination, had to pay as not eligible on the NHS. Told the vaccinator I was doing it to reduce the risk of Alzheimer’s disease and she said her last customer was a neuroscientist there for the same reason. 💉

@DAaronovitch Walked to the village hall in our beautiful playing fields at sunset last night and felt quite emotional at my extraordinary luck and privilege - we should never take the democratic process for granted however flawed it is.

Yet again, whatever the result, I love the process of voting: the other voters doing their democratic duty, the pleasant poll workers, the little secret ritual, the pencil and the ballot paper. No shouting, no demonstrations, just people making their individual decisions

@CliveWismayer Recently saw an amazing film - Comrade Tambo's London Recruits - and we said exactly this. Young electricians and railway workers supporting the ANC struggle in SA. What is the equivalent today?

Maybe I’m falsifying reality. It’s not a subject I’ve studied, but wasn’t the working class far more radical & politically switched on between the wars? Extension of the franchise, general strike, support for the left in the Spanish civil war. It’s pitiful how so many have sunk into mindless racism.
Martin Bückley 🇪🇺🏳️‍🌈🏳️‍⚧️🌹@MartinBuckby

Working class people voting Reform today are even worse than those who were tricked into voting for Thatcher in the 80s. Thatcher hated the working classes Reform hate the working classes

This true story has generated a lot of untrue responses from the usual know-nothing Twitter pontificators. So here’s the full story. It’s 2013, I hosted a dinner for US contacts and journos in NYC in a rather fancy, expensive restaurant owned by a friend. It was a thank you. Not on expenses. I’m forking out — happily. Good people. A great fun dinner but the bill came to circa $1,000. Gulp. I paid by card and slipped the waiter, a young aspiring actor (as they tend to be in NY), $150 cash. I thought that was quite generous. Especially $150 in 2013 prices. More like $200+ today. Anyway he quickly returned and asked loudly and aggressively if there was a problem. No, I said. All good. Well, he said the tip was ‘bit light’. By now the whole table was looking at me and him. I panicked and bunged him more dollars. He departed without a word of thanks. On the way home my partner saw I was fuming with the embarrassment, almost humiliation. Call the owner, she said. I did. I didn’t ask him to fire the waiter but said it was an embarrassing/humiliating experience in front of colleagues and I doubt I’d go back to his restaurant. Perhaps he could have a word. I learned later he fired him because he had something of a trackrecord in this matter. I lost no sleep over that even if it wasn’t my aim. Ever since I’ve taken no nonsense from aggressive NY waiters. I’m from Paisley and can give as good if not better than I get. One waiter who subsequently complained about his 20%(!) tip found it cut to 10%. Tips are war in NY restaurants. Stand up for yourself. Don’t be mean but don’t fall over in embarrassent when they behave badly. And please don’t import this culture from USA to dear old Blighty. End of.

@edwardlucas So sorry for your loss - she sounds amazing. When I saw the death notice yesterday with donations requested to Freedom from Torture I knew at once the wonderful person she must have been. I actually discussed it with my son. I hope he will remember when the time comes!

This is the statement of Leanna Lucas in the Southport Report. One of the dance teachers on that day. P89. "Leanne Lucas described the profound impact the attack has had on her life, her work and her family. At the outset, she acknowledged the unimaginable trauma experienced by the families of the children, emphasising that it was not her intention to compare suffering but instead to recount her personal experience. Before the attack, as a primary school teacher and children’s yoga instructor she had found joy, purpose and fulfilment in nurturing and inspiring children. The attack abruptly ended her professional life; she has not returned to teaching or yoga, leading to a profound loss of identity and confidence. The hours leading up to the attack had been joyful and full of energy, making the sudden violence especially devastating. She was stabbed multiple times, suffering injuries to her chest, back, head, arm and shoulder; her spine was damaged. She tried to protect and evacuate the children while calling emergency services and despite fearing for her own life. She recalls the chaos, her fear for the children’s safety and her sense of uncertainty as to her own survival.

@ejtayloruk My neighbour- a free spirited adventure seeking lesbian- took part in this and described it as a horrendous degrading and pornographic experience. She was traumatised and left feeling exploited and degraded. Repulsive event that has no place in our public spaces

People keep telling me the World Naked Bike Ride is “just a bit of fun.” Fun for who? Because it’s not fun for the children exposed to it. It’s not fun when boundaries are blurred in public spaces. And it’s definitely not fun when concerns are brushed off like they don’t matter. Then I was sent this: “There were men taking pictures of young naked females (without asking)…” Let that sink in. If that doesn’t make you uncomfortable, we have a serious problem. This isn’t about being “prudish.” It’s about safeguarding, accountability, protecting children in spaces they should feel safe in. Calling it “fun” doesn’t make the risks disappear. It just makes people feel better about ignoring them. If you’re not okay with this either, do something about it: change.org/p/the-naked-bi… @NickSmi74202914 @Telegraph @DailyMirror @DailyMail @itvpresscentre

Pain after illness is not an injury. It's your immune system, ANS, mitochondria, joints, and brain all responding to systemic stress simultaneously. It will resolve — but only if you give it room to. Zone 1 movement, sleep, time in nature, and patience are the medicine. The fitness will come back. yes... It's torture... but at least you know why.
