BAE Systems has unveiled its new autonomous fighter drone today. Dubbed Brontanax – or “thunder king” in Ancient Greek - will take to the skies next year before flying a concept demonstrator with RAF Typhoons. Wes Streeting, the new Defence Secretary, said: “We must match the speed of which our adversaries are developing AI technology. With this launch today, BAE are delivering on that, and we will adopt this as our operational concept demonstrator, and we're going to get it in the air in 2027. “This is a groundbreaking moment for UK defence, not just for air power, but for reindustriatlisarion.” Air Chief Marshal Sir Harv Smyth, the head of the RAF, said: “This is an historic moment. With this launch, we are witnessing the start of a meaningful pivot towards sixth generation air power, where uncrewed air systems integrate seamlessly with our crewed platforms exponentially increasing our survivability are lethality, and ultimately, our conventional deterrence.  “We also gather at a moment when the international order faces its most severe test in generations. Along the length of Europe's eastern flank, across the breadth of the Middle East and in the High North, our Royal Air Force air crew are witnessing the future of air power being written in real time.  “Advanced technology proliferated across the globe as democratised lethality and tempo, and this should concern us.  “The threat is real, it is growing exponentially, and we need to move at pace to counteract it. “Control of the air is the absolute prerequisite for military success.
