The story of Vince Neil’s car accident is one of the darkest and most controversial tragedies in 1980s glam metal. It occurred on December 8, 1984, in Redondo Beach, California. At the time, Mötley Crüe was at the height of its popularity after touring with Ozzy Osbourne. Vince Neil, the charismatic lead singer, was partying at his home with several friends, including Nicholas “Razzle” Dingley, the drummer for the Finnish band Hanoi Rocks, who was visiting Los Angeles. The party had been going on for several days, and everyone had been drinking heavily. Vince, who already had a reputation as a hard-partying reveler, decided to go to a nearby liquor store to buy more alcohol. Razzle got into the car with him: a powerful orange 1972 De Tomaso Pantera that Vince wanted to show off. It was around 6:38 p.m. Vince was driving drunk (his blood alcohol level was 0.17, nearly double the legal limit at the time, which was 0.10). Driving at high speed in a residential area (it was estimated he was going about 105 km/h in a 40 km/h zone), he lost control while trying to swerve around a fire truck parked on a wet patch of road. The Pantera swerved into the oncoming lane and collided violently with an oncoming car. The impact was brutal. Razzle died instantly from severe head trauma. He was taken to South Bay Hospital, but there was nothing that could be done. The two occupants of the other vehicle, Lisa Hogan and Daniel Smithers, were seriously injured: they suffered permanent brain damage, and their lives were changed forever. Vince emerged from the accident with broken ribs and cuts on his face, but miraculously alive. None of them were wearing seatbelts. Vince was arrested immediately, charged with vehicular homicide and driving under the influence of alcohol. He was released on $2,500 bail that same night. The case took nearly two years to resolve. In September 1986, he was sentenced to 30 days in jail, five years of probation, 200 hours of community service, and $2.6 million in compensation to the victims. He served only 15 days in prison due to good behavior. Many considered the sentence too lenient, especially Razzle’s family and the victims of the other car. The accident deeply affected Vince and the entire Mötley Crüe. In the book *The Dirt* (and in the Netflix series), Vince recounts how the emotional impact hit him all at once at the police station, when they confirmed that Razzle had died. He says it changed the way he drank: from being a “happy drunk” to something darker. Hanoi Rocks disbanded shortly thereafter. Andy McCoy and Michael Monroe, Razzle’s bandmates, have spoken harshly about the incident over the years; some feel that Vince never apologized sufficiently or showed true public remorse. Vince Neil has been arrested several more times for drunk driving in subsequent decades (including 2010). The accident remains a reminder of the excesses of 80s rock. A night of partying that ended a life and left lasting scars on several people.
