Woman records the Muslim call to prayer being broadcast over loudspeakers in Dearborn, Michigan. Every resident is subjected to hearing it five times a day, from sunrise to sunset. How is this even allowed in America?

@coldhealing It is hard to scale up to get rich that way, because it is just flat out hard to scale a trades business. But that difficulty in scaling makes it easier to be successful locally. Success isn't defined by being to compete against the "big dogs", but just having steady work.

@coldhealing In our society, a successful (but not too exciting) business is the way to secure upper middle class. You don't have to be in the trades to do it, but I think it is the most *reliable* place to do it because it easier to start off with yourself as the only employee and grow.

If you were advising a widely-talented 17yo today who wanted the safest path to the upper middle class what college major would you recommend? I genuinely don't know. The world is changing a lot. It's probably not computer science. Maybe it's mechanical engineering or math?

I know this happens to young people too, of course, but it starts to happen more as you age. This is the first time I've lost someone I was in an active TTRPG with. I've lost friends before, but it hits harder when I thought I'd see him and his wife at game on Sunday!

One of the worst things about being a middle aged gamer is that sometimes games aren't cancelled for reasons like "player is too hung over" or "player forgot they had an exam the next day", but instead things like "player died suddenly". Real life sucks sometimes.

@hexcrawl I feel this is a side effect of some authors realizing most gaming supplements never actually see play, so they might be better able to sell them if they write them to be read instead of to be played.

My view is that the author of a published adventure should consider themselves a co-conspirator with the GM. That means clearly and concisely explaining what the plan is. It is strangely common for published adventures to try to pull a fast one on the GM.

I don't know which TTRPG GMs need to hear this, but: Your scenes run too long, you should be cutting and moving onto the next thing sooner. (it is me. I'm the TTRPG GM that needs to hear that)

@maiamindel because the issue is that people take bigger risks than that in daily life with much less concern, for much less benefit. you’re much more likely to face significant consequences from driving to the grocery store than you are from getting LASIK

@hecubian_devil I think part of it is that role models are, yes, people we want to be like - but part of that is we want to be like them *because we want to be treated by society the same way they are*. So no wonder even if cis boys see women they admire, they don't often want to *be* them.

@AlysssaHazel I'm a bigger guy but I work a pretty sedentary job and rarely work out, and I absolutely could carry that weight up a few flights of stairs. *I* would probably be pretty winded after doing it but, then, I'm out of shape. Quiet depends more on the stairs than anything.

Question: How easy is it for a man who regularly works out to carry someone around 115-120 pounds up a few flights of stairs? Not trained for it, but a standard blue collar type of guy? And how quiet can this process be?

I know a TTRPG will not be for me if it feels like, most of the time, in any given scene in the game there's only one obviously supported mode for getting through the scene and on to the next thing. Especially when it is usually "combat".

Everyone is fine with a boycott. No one is fine with arson. No one got punched because they had a Bud Lite in their hand. I know other people are saying this too but seriously. Boycotts are great. It's the right way to show a corporation your anger.

A friend 20 years ago was trying to explain to me how killing terrorists wouldn't lead to a decrease in terrorism and I could not see his logic. "But THOSE terrorists won't kill anyone more." I said. He literally said that when a terrorist is killed it auto-radicalizes the population to produce one or more replacements. I said, "Is this why killing Imperial Japanese troops or Confederate soldiers led to neverending wars?" And he got mad at me and the discussion wasn't continued.

@SchnittkeAlfred @lxeagle17 I think what count as "fundamentals" vary depending on what you're studying. But as far as LLMs go, I think a good guide is to just never delegate anything to them you couldn't easily do yourself. Maybe use them to avoid tedium, but never to avoid learning.

@lxeagle17 What are the fundamentals though? Going by the math analogy, it would be Assembly, but few CS programs start with that and most programmers dont have a deep knowledge of it. Is it OOP? There's no guarantee that it will remain the main coding paradigm even a decade from now.

Some people replied saying LLMs are akin to calculators. There is a reason calculators are not allowed for elementary schoolers before they learn addition/multiplication — and I'd argue that the same thing goes for AI and coding. Don't use it until you've mastered fundamentals.

I'm teaching databases this semester at Berkeley. My students all seem unusually brilliant. Not many go to office hours, and not too many folks post on the course forum asking project questions. Weirdly, the exam had the lowest recorded average in my 10 semesters teaching it.
