deeply saddened to hear @Majdiashour has passed away after a short illness Majdi worked as a medical officer in UNRWA before undertaking a PhD on health systems in the Gaza Strip. He was a deeply committed and gifted researcher and I feel immensely privileged to have known him

Can't say this enough; Elon Musk's menace to democracy is intolerable. He's using the largest & most influential platform in the democratic world to stoke racial conflict and civil breakdown - in his own posts & what X promotes. Democracies can no longer ignore this.

@Rob_Percival_ @kesievert had basically the same thought - interesting how some of more radical aspects of UPF as an idea have been stripped away as it has travelled

Our focus should be on ultra-processed *diets* rather than individual UPF products; on the ultra-processed *food systems* that persistently create those diets; and on *corporate capture* and *financialisation* as the core drivers of the UPF-induced public health crisis. Yeah?

@piercepenniless as someone who researches corporate power, I find the concept useful in understanding the core products and business models of ‘big food’ but the discourse has shifted towards moralising / individualist understanding which is feel much less comfortable with

I feel like I should be the target audience for this – I'm v much a from-scratch cook, make my own pasta, buy little processed food, believe there are plenty of unhealthy and obesogenic products – but find myself sceptical about the whole thing.

Puzzled by this Guardian listicle, another in their series explaining we should be terrified, horrified, fearful of "Ultra Processed Foods"... except these ones, because they're nice (and middle class). theguardian.com/lifeandstyle/a…

@MIALONMelissa I think there’s also an important distinction between ‘markets’ and corporations - a point made by Susan Strange

@PhilipProudfoot @jana_bacevic This is from 2019 - not sure you can support radical solutions without recognising the role of civil society and social moments in advocating for them
