Media: "United Parcel Service @UPS has cut 48,000 management and operations positions, the company disclosed Tuesday when it reported earnings. Of those roles, 14,000 were management positions and 34,000 were jobs in operations. The reductions came through layoffs and buyouts, the company said. The job cuts were greater than the shipper announced in April when it said it would cut about 20,000 operational jobs. In January 2024, UPS said it planned to cut about 12,000 management jobs." wsj.com/business/logis… @estherfung @connorhart22 @WSF

Judge Indefinitely Halts Shutdown Layoffs Noting Human Toll | "A federal judge in San Francisco has indefinitely halted the #Trump administration's mass layoffs of federal employees tied to the government shutdown. The decision came almost two weeks after US District Judge Susan Illston temporarily paused thousands of layoffs, known as RIFs, or reductions-in-force, at agencies where the federal employee unions that brought the lawsuit, including the American Federation of Government Employees, have members or bargaining units." @Andrea_c_hsu npr.org/2025/10/28/nx-… @NPR

Media: Live Updates: "Federal Judge Temporarily Blocks Troop Deployment in Chicago Area -- A federal judge on Thursday temporarily blocked National Guard operations in the Chicago area, saying that the #Trump administration’s version of events was 'simply unreliable' and that deploying troops anywhere in the state would 'only add fuel to the fire.' A lawyer for the administration had argued in a hearing that the troops were needed to protect federal agents and property from protests, including at an immigration facility in the suburbs. But the judge, April M. Perry, sided with the state, saying that she had “seen no credible evidence that there is a danger of a rebellion in the state of Illinois.” nytimes.com/live/2025/10/0… @nytimes

Media: @ElieHonig to @abbydphillip in response to @CornelWest on racial profiling by ICE agents: "To Dr. West's point, there was a Supreme Court opinion three, four weeks ago where the court essentially said it's okay to profile. ICE agents in California were stopping people -- not disputed -- explicitly on the basis of whether they appeared to be from another country based on their skin color, if they were speaking another language, where they were (carwash, Home Depot, that kind of thing). "I thought, 'No way the Supreme Court is going to approve this.' And the Supreme Court was the usual six-three split. They said, that's okay, that's permissible, at least for the time being. . . . "I was shocked by that opinion." ►Honig's new book, "When You Come at the King: Inside DoJ's Pursuit of the President, from Nixon to Trump," now is out from @HarperCollins: harpercollins.com/products/when-…

Media: @IndyVetsAmerica's @PaulRieckhoff to @abbydphillip on the @PeteHegseth rant to the top #US military leaders at #Quantico: "It's unprecedented, it's unacceptable, it's overtly political and partisan. And if you watch that speech, whether you're a general or not, you think that our enemies are fat generals, the City of Portland, Trump's political enemies, and #DEI, and it's a really low point for the division that's supposed to exist between our partisan politics and our military. "But the shining part of it, the silver lining, if you will, is that the generals kept their military bearing. They didn't applaud. They were stoic, and they showed why they are the guardrails protecting our military, our democracy from what is a very extreme political agenda that, from #Hegseth, sounded kind of like a culture-war TED Talk rather than a proper, respectful address to our senior military."

Media: @MollyJongFast: "With government funding due to run out, the two sides are locked in an unwinnable standoff. On one side, #Trump doesn’t seem to care whether the government runs effectively or at all. On the other, #Democrats find themselves in a difficult position: to fund the government and watch #Republicans continue disassembling it, or shut down the government and inadvertently give Trump even more power. Shutting down the government is the only power Democrats have. But the Democratic leadership focused on health care probably because they think that the issue will garner more support among the base than, say, shutting down the president’s paramilitary organization (ICE). Even some Republicans want to extend Affordable Care Act subsidies and Obamacare is popular, even if it’s not super easy to explain. One has to wonder if Democrats will succeed at creating a clear message around something as complicated as the idea of subsidies." vanityfair.com/news/story/the… @VanityFair

Media: "There does not seem to be a clear point or purpose in president #Trump’s address to military generals today. It’s a garden variety tear; he’s talking about tariffs, @JoeBiden and the autopen, the southern border, @CNN, his personal feelings about president Vladimir V. #Putin of Russia and his anxieties that he won’t be given a Nobel Peace Prize he feels he deserves. These are things he talks about almost every day regardless of audience or setting. Every so often he throws in a statistic or observation he has about the military. 'I think we should maybe start thinking about battleships, by the way' he said at one point in the middle of a riff about tariffs. 'I used to watch Victory at Sea. I love Victory at Sea.'” @ShawnMcCreesh nytimes.com/live/2025/09/3… @nytimes

Media: Chief William Renye of the Grand Blanc Michigan Township police @GBTPOLICE reports that two more bodies have been found in the church, bringing the total of victim-fatalities to four. There are some people unaccounted for at this point. In addition, the suspect in the attack on this Church of the Latter-day Saints is also dead. Acting Special Agent in Charge Reuben Coleman of the @FBI Detroit Field Office says the #FBI is leading the investigation and classifies the event as an "attack of targeted violence." The public is asked to be vigilant, calling in a sighting of something you might consider suspicious. Responders are trying to clear debris at the site of the church and its fire. (The suspect is believed to have used an accelerant, probably gasoline, to set the church on fire.) The @ATFHQ is engaged on the apparent arson element of the event.

Media: @ElieHonig to @kaitlancollins: "Six days ago, #DonaldTrump sent out that first Truth Social post in which he said -- I'm paraphrasing here -- 'What's happening with #Comey and @NewYorkStateAG #LetitiaJames and @SenAdamSchiff (D-CA)? They're guilty as hell.' "And what happens? Within 24 or 48 hours, the career prosecutor, the conservative, the Trump appointee Erik Siebert is gone. "In comes this novice, Lindsey Halligan, she's never touched a criminal case until this week. And then days later, there's an indictment of -- Oh, my gosh! -- one the three Trump-listed people. "@DAGToddBlanche can deny it, but we can all see that they're responding to the president's pressure. "This is going to be a major problem for the prosecutors. This is going to give #JimComey's defense team a very powerful motion to dismiss this case. "I've never seen a stronger case for 'selective prosecution,' because usually the president doesn't write it out and tweet it out to tens or hundreds of millions of people." ►Honig's new book, "When You Come at the King: Inside DoJ's Pursuit of the President, from Nixon to Trump," is now out from @HarperCollins. harpercollins.com/products/when-…

Media: Trump Will Slap Tariffs on Imported Drugs, Trucks and Household Furnishings -- The effects of the new tariffs are likely to be felt across sectors of the economy, from housing and health care to logistics. The tariffs range from 25 percent to 100 percent, with the highest levies applying to 'any branded or patented' pharmaceutical product coming into the United States." @AnaSwanson @RebeccaDRobbins @peterjeavis nytimes.com/2025/09/25/bus… @nytimes

An @MIT report found 95% of organizations surveyed are getting no return on their AI product investments. Media: @ElieHonig to @abbydphillip: "It will take a miracle to turn this mess of a case into a conviction. It all comes down to this allegation: #JimComey was lying when he said he did not authorize the leak, and #AndyMcCabe was telling the truth when he said that he, Andy McCabe, authorized the leak and then told Jim Comey about it afterwards. "Those two things are not even necessarily in conflict, right? "If one of your employees came to you and said, 'Hey, yesterday, I did something,' then you could say, 'I didn't authorize it,' right? "Those two things are perfectly in sync with one another . . Now we see the indictment and it's weak."

Media: @eliehonig to @kaitlancollins: "When #DonaldTrump put up his social media post over the weekend, it was a line that was crossed. We had a president directly ordering #DoJ to indict one of his political opponents. Then we saw other indicators that there might be problems with this indictment, the fact that it went nearly to the end of the five-year statute of limitations on an area that's been looked at exhaustively and nobody has seen fit to charge it . . . I was willing to keep an open mind [but] this thing is decrepit. "It all comes down to this allegation that #JimComey lied when he said that he had not authorized a leak. This pits Jim #Comey's word on the one hand against #AndyMcCabe's word on the other hand . . . It's possible that neither of them was lying . . . Jim Comey said 'I did not authorize the leak.' Andy McCabe said, 'I authorized the leak and told Jim Comey about it the day after.' "Those could both be true. It's a mess. I'd be shocked if it gets to a jury."
