This kid is very clearly being picked on and her social skills aren’t developed enough to realize it. I really feel for kids like this because often they don’t know just how far behind they are, both socially and skill-wise, until they’re thrown into the workforce

Before you complain about the younger generation always being on their phones, or the local kids raising “safety concerns,” ask yourself whether your town has any public place where teenagers can hang out and do things without supervision (I’m willing to bet the answer is “no”)

And IIRC even in the Iliad it was very clear Odysseus didn’t want to be there. He tried to fake insanity in order to avoid actually fighting until one of the other Greek champions called him out on his bullshit. He was there for duty, not glory

I haven’t watched the Nolan film yet but I’ve read both the Iliad and the Odyssey and to me a lot of the complaints seem to just be people going into it expecting an adaptation of the Iliad

Emily Wilson after watching the Odyssey: ‘The film presents an Odysseus who feels very bad about things that he's done in war, and is struggling to process them in a very modern, psychiatrised way – and needs drugs to do so! He seems to feel bad about being a warrior, and we never actually see him get to do much warrioring ... Nolan makes the protagonist a likeable, all-American hero; Homer's Odysseus wants glory, and he wants to get spoils from the sack of a city! I kept looking in vain for a sense that this was a film about glory. This is a film that has an interest in shame, but I don't think it has any interest in glory.’

the issue is that BOOKS are falling in quality and a ton of published works lately are fanfic-level literature. It's not that fanfics are suddenly better, it's that published books have dropped massively in quality
