@hide2k10 Great question. I think it is because Western studio pottery's godfather is Bernard Leach, who was obsessed with Japanese and Chinese pottery. So the inspiration has been on small production Asian ceramics rather than the wonderful artisan factory production in 18thC Europe

@PostcardTeas Any ideas on why Western contemporary potters don’t seem to be interested in making the best tea drinking vessels for tea in a Western style and prefer to adopt Japanese styles?
