Iran’s coup de grace against USAF electronic warfare I want to correct my report about 2 AWACS planes being destroyed. It was actually 1 AWACS E-3, but the picture actually gets worse for the US. In addition to the E-3, two EC-130Hs were damaged beyond repair. These jets are top tier SEAD assets, vital to suppressing air defenses through jamming and monitoring. They were going to be used in the invasion of an Iranian island. The idea was these planes in addition to Growlers would target and suppress AD while the 82nd flew in with helicopters. Iran preempted this move and destroyed the asset. These planes are RARE, and only 3 remained in service before this attack. Now it’s just 1. These are even more painful than AWACS losses and the equipment onboard is extremely sensitive so it’s likely a total loss even if the surface damage seems less than the AWACS. The Iranians have just murdered the United States’s ability to combat China and Russia at the same time. The US built 14 of these but it’s unlikely the decommissioned planes can still fulfil this role because the electronics within them are constantly upgraded.

Trump intuitively understands that tribalism overrides every other human emotion. He can tell his supporters "I am lying to you," and instead of being outraged, they feel like they're part of the inner circle who gets to know the plan.

Trump: I won't use the word war because they say if you use the word war, that's maybe not a good thing to do. They don't like the word war because you are supposed to get approval. So I will use the word military operation.

Prospects for a deal. Someone asked me on Substack chat. Here is what I wrote. “I think there is a narrow path to a deal. The US has already offered full sanctions relief. And likely agreed to evacuate the bases. The sticking point seems to be that the US cannot credibly reassure Iran that it and especially the Israelis won’t attack it again. One possible solution is for the Chinese to agree to rearm Iran and replenish its missile arsenal. But they seem to be dragging their feet. The Iranians are trying to seduce and coerce them into it. Maybe once the Chinese themselves stare into the abyss they will jump off their neutral position and agree to it. Another issue is that it is not clear than the US will accept what amounts to Iranian hegemony in the gulf. So we may see escalation to a ground war instead. That remains the central scenario bc this strategic defeat is such a bitter pill to swallow for the former superpower.”

Can these airborne command posts use far away bases in Israel, Jordan, Crete, Cyprus, Turkey, or Germany? Yes, but only at the cost of severely degrading performance. You need to understand that it is not just 1 kill. Protection of this force is a paramount military objective. They must necessarily be withdrawn from forward bases. This is even more important than winning this war of aggression because of the impossibility of replacing these birds any time soon!

@baoshaoshan @policytensor As a high value target, that would suggest the remainder will need to be resolved elsewhere - out of range IOW 🇺🇸 surveillance coverage will be further weakened...

Nearly every place we visited in the last few days was struck shortly after we left, including an area directly adjacent to the hotel we were staying in. I thought I was being paranoid at first but after the Minab school was bombed just minutes after we left, which coincided with the news of two murdered journalists in Lebanon, Ive really come to believe that these were threats. As Dimitri said, there’s nothing we can do except continue our work. Their crimes must be exposed.

Today, we visited the Minab school in southern Iran, where US forces massacred 168 students and teachers at the outset of the Trump-Netanyahu war of aggression on Iran. About ten minutes after we left the Minab school today, it was hit with a drone strike. (The aftermath of that strike was captured in this video). Yesterday, we were in the Iranian city of Bushehr, which lies on the Persian Gulf to the north of Minab. Shortly after we left our hotel in Bushehr, there was an airstrike on a target directly across the street from our hotel. While we were in Bushehr, we visited a marine terminal that had sustained damage in airstrikes conducted earlier this month. Shortly after we left the marine terminal, it too was hit with an airstrike. Another site that we visited in Bushehr yesterday was also hit with an airstrike shortly after we left it. Now all of this could be random. On the other hand, it may be that U.S.-Israeli forces are sending us a message. If in fact they are sending us a message, we have a message for them. Our message is that no amount of intimidation will stop us from exposing their monstrous crimes. #Iran #Iranwar

Understand that the Israelis are doing this on purpose. The US has already asked them to stop. But they keep going bc they want to thwart a ceasefire. They’re playing with house money. And they are getting away with it bc they bought Washington.
Richard N. Haass@RichardHaass

It is not clear whether Iran's parliament speaker was killed, but what is clear is that these targeted killings must stop. They will not bring about regime change, but they will undermine what limited prospects still exist for negotiating an acceptable end to this war.

10-U.S. officials keep emphasizing tactical successes, ignoring the growing strategic defeat. Am working on writing this up now: I am seeing a huge potential for this to be like a 1905 Russia moment when defeat of the Russian Navy by Japan led to unrest and revolution at home.
