The fee is never a fee on the sacrament, but on the priest’s time and the resources the parish uses. Water, light, and anything else use for baptism has a price. Many parishes also make the fee mandatory because people parish hop. They get their kids baptized and never appear again to support the parishes.

Now, to be fair, Catholic first communions and confirmations go crazy. Tons of gifts. Usually devotional items. Sometimes you just get envelopes with cash.

@PresbyInn I was confirmed this morning in the Episcopal Church (after being baptised). I received a beautiful edition of the Book of Common Prayer, a candle, certificates, cake, and most importantly, immense kindness and support from all those around me. Cost: 0.

People were positively excited about it. We welcomed a new member to the visible church! With the ethnic celebrations around Catholic baptism mostly fading, turbo normie Catholic parishioners treat baptisms like "oh no, this means Mass is going to be 65 minutes instead of 55."

@PresbyInn I don’t believe in child baptism unless they declare their faith and that they want to be baptized!

Point blanket coats are iconic of modern Canada and were originally a British military adaptation of Quebecois voyageur capotes. During the Revolution, Americans commonly made similar coats, often made of white “Dutch blankets” rather than point blankets (made in Oxfordshire)

"so you wanted your child baptized?" "Yes, Dave." "And they said pay $50 as an offering?" "Yes, Dave." "But they said the offering is non-negotiable?" "Yes, Dave." And you're telling me this isn't a fee for service?" "Yes, Dave." "..."

"The gospel of Christ is a remedial law, and you hope to have remedy by it. It is a charter of privileges, and you hope to be privileged by it; but how can you expect either remedy or privilege by it, if you will not observe its precepts, nor come up to its conditions? The gospel will never save you if it shall not rule you." —Matthew Henry, Four Discourses Against Vice and Profaneness

@DemokratikNiko There's nothing wrong in principle with honoring the dead and depending on circumstances may not even be wrong as the main principle of one's churchmanship.

@PresbyInn If I may inquire, what’s so wrong with honoring those who came before us and laid the foundations for a center of faith in the community? Is it just that some make it their only point?

The Reconquista crowd is largely Gen Z, Gen Z rightly doesn't put stock in credentials, rather practical competence & authentic talent. But Gen X and Millennials still do. So they need to be prepared to get railroaded by 40+ "M.Div here" types, can't sperg their way through it.

That sort of politicking doesn't win any ideological battles. But it demoralizes Rev. Skyler. He's going to realize that he can't use his time in this congregation to build his portfolio for the next job with Presbyterian Outlook articles about "welcoming the stranger even when it's dangerous." He'll find a new congregation. And you'll have a chance at getting someone more orthodox in leadership.
