Someone asked me why is Chloroquine no longer used for malaria treatment and I promised to answer it with a post. The reason is to update everyone else who needs to know. So, what exactly happened to Chloroquine? Long story short; The main reason was drug resistance The malaria parasite responsible for severe malaria is called Plasmodium falciparum, and gradually, Chloroquine developed resistance to chloroquine. This means the drug stopped working effectively against malaria infections. Because of this widespread resistance, treatment guidelines were changed. The World Health Organization recommended that countries, including Nigeria, stop using chloroquine and switch to Artemisinin-based Combination Therapy (ACT), which works better against resistant strains. Even though chloroquine was once very effective, affordable, and easy to use, resistance made it unreliable to use. Continuing to use it could also increase the risk of multi-drug resistance, which is dangerous for malaria control. In simple terms, Chloroquine was withdrawn because the malaria parasite outsmarted it. 🏷️Negative effects of Chloroquine Aside from resistance, chloroquine also has notable side effects, including: -Psychiatric problems -Retinal problems affecting vision -Neurological issues -Hypersensitivity reactions -Cardiac disorders -Severe gastrointestinal irritation -Ear disorder that cab affect hearing -Lowering of blood sugar level in an undesired way In pharmaceutical care , when the risks associated with a drug outweighs the benefits of th said drug, the option is usually to avoid using the drug. Not every old drug is a bad drug. But when resistance sets in, pharmacy practice and healthcare must move forward. That was the case of Chloroquine for its use in Malaria treatment.
