Heute fast vergessen: Es kam zu einer einzigen Volksabstimmung zur Rechtschreibreform von 1996. Am 27. September 1998 stimmten in Schleswig-Holstein 56,4 % für die Wiedereinführung der alten Rechtschreibung in den Schulen (das entsprach 41,6 % der Stimmberechtigten und überschritt das 25%-Quorum deutlich). Nur ein Jahr später erklärte der Landtag das Ergebnis dieser Volksabstimmung für nichtig und führte die neue Rechtschreibung trotzdem ein.
