@eschy12 I feel like this is how I might have been taught this in school…but I never learned it. It never made sense. It was after college that I leaned to split the middle term and factor by grouping from a student I was tutoring and it blew my mind.

@LeNoirMalgreLui @Mathgarden Personally I think it is valid to have a deadline in order to make class management possible. But making deadlines hard for the sake of preparing them for life is flawed.
English

@Mathgarden I teach 150 students. 3 different levels. I give 9 assessments/quarter per class. That’s: 150*9 = 1350 assessments I must grade. I grade a minimum of 6 practice exercises per quarter. 6*150=900. 1350+900= 2250 items to grade & provide feedback. How do I manage w/o deadlines?
English

@dhabecker Both of these 1s represent 10. I would tell them it is a shortcut way to say they are adding 10
English

@pwharris Convert to 10/3 Div 4. Then rewrite 40/12 div 4 = 10/12

It’s really cute, our math tutors made mathy valentines and put them all over the department. But is this one really appropriate? 🤣😳🫣🧐 instagram.com/p/CosL-q6r35fA…

@matthematician It it’s one I don’t use often, I rely on examples and non-examples to remind me what the pieces should be. Sentences are also used often, and I encourage students to write their own sentences. There are some definitions that I remember verbatim, but those are less common.
English

@melissag427 I see if differently. Part of the issue is we don’t call kids mathematicians at all, as if we assume they are not and never will be. A struggling reader seems like a temporary condition of a future thriving reader. I am all for deleting deficit terminology though.

@NolanFossum @Thanheiser @YehCathery @ProfessARuiz @JennHagman and I created a whole thang on wealth distribution, inspired by this lesson for our #hiddenstats program at @UCLAMathProject lets chat about it!

Kicking things off at the #NCTMLA22 preconference session with an investigation of wealth distribution with @Thanheiser @YehCathery @ProfessARuiz and Basil Conway. So impactful!

@blkmathmagic @doctor_jekel It would be interesting to casually ask the men what percent of the people there are women (at a moment where they can’t look around at the group). They will likely estimate higher than reality.
