Under the international treaties you signed, you committed to keeping these islands demilitarized. You only took possession of them on the condition that no weapons would be deployed there; the transfer of sovereignty was strictly contingent on this.

A dispute has erupted again between Greece and Turkey over the Aegean islands. The Turkish Defense Ministry stated that Greece is stationing troops on demilitarized islands, violating international agreements from 1923 and 1947. The issue in the Aegean is not about the status of the islands, but Greece’s agression to international law. Civilized states act accordingly with the principle of pacta sunt servanda. F.e, Finland has never attempted to alter the demilitarized status of the Åland Islands.
