@PeevedPets Well... he DID get it right for the majority of his Bitcoin. So there's that.
Multisig. Multisig. Multisig.
English

@ProofOfMoney It’s so scary because if he can’t get it right, how can someone like me get it right you know?
English

17.39 Bitcoin swiped😢
You all know him.
Solid Bitcoin educator.
Been here a long time.
You've enjoyed his posts.
But he was scammed by Coldcard.
Not Bitcoin. And not self-custody.
It think he took advantage of the bear market back in 2022.
This was after the Terra/Luna collapse in May 2022... the Celsius freeze in June... and the Three Arrows Capital blow up in July.
Bitcoin hovered around 20k.
From my understanding he made all of these purchases on the same exchange about 4 years ago, and then transferred them into his own wallet, generated from a single-sig Coldcard key.
But just a few days ago, due to blatant negligence of epic proportions on Coldcard's side (not performing the function they purported to), his Bitcoin was swiped.
You'd think he'd know better as an educator. And he does.
As horrific as this is, it's a smaller percentage of his holdings, and he's mostly in multi-signature wallets... thankfully.
But it still hurts. It still represents a lot of sacrifices he made to save that amount.
(he said I could post without doxxing him, so sharing that it happens to the best of us)
This makes him the 5th largest victim so far.

@ProofofMindBTC So I glad I follow you for high signal like this, Heather!

I’m literally waiting in the parking lot for the person who parked next to me to move so I can get into my car lol. There are over 50 open spots in the lot, but this person parked so close to me that I cannot get into my car. I decided to take it as a divine message to just wait and talk to the person rather than climbing through my hatch. We’ll see what happens. ☠️🤦♀️😜

@guldpose They all transfer to the hacker wallets. Pretty easy to track onchain.
English

@ProofOfMoney How do you know these are thefts? What is the fingerprint you are looking for that tells you these are coldcard thefts and not regular transactions?
English

@ProofOfMoney How can trust be regained in this company from here forward?
English

Coldcard “never retains your personal information.”
This was supposedly another benefit of this device.
This is why they said they couldn’t contact Bitcoin customers when this exploit happened 4 days ago.
But now (4 days too late!!) they are suddenly emailing all of their customers.
Unbelievable. Just received this from a purchase I made 4 years ago (bought a BlockClock).
Failure across the board 😢

English

@theDAHTcom It’s probably giving me the wrong price! Is Bitcoin not $963,000?
English

@ProofOfMoney At this point, how certain are you that the wifi connected BlockClock isn't also a security risk?
English

@Hodl4ever001 I don’t think so, at least not in my case. I never signed up for anything.
English

@ProofOfMoney I hear from spaces that they had newsletter when you bought their products. There was an opt out if you didn't want it. Is this how they are contacting people? Just curious
English

@BitcoinGent Math shouldn’t require adding.
But yet it does.
English

@ProofOfMoney Mate, that’s too complicated. Self custody should not require three sets of keys.

I've been pounding the table for close to 10 years now on the importance of a multi-signature setup for your Bitcoin.
Videos, articles, posts, books.
Many of us can't verify everything. So we have to DISTRIBUTE the trust to MINIMIZE it.
I believe multi-sig achieves that.
Many choices (Unchained, Theya, Swan, Casa, Nunchuk, Liana, Anchor Watch, BitVault, etc).
All essentially do the same thing by holding a backup key for you (and some do more if you want).
You have 3 different keys, with 3 different sets of entropy generation from 3 different security models/companies.
And you have the option to put those keys where you want, including with an agent (or into the future) if you desire.
Any of those companies above will walk you through the process.
And if you find that process too daunting... don't self-custody.
Although Bitcoin is for everyone, self-custody has never been.

English

@London_lasvegas There is literally no other way to hold Bitcoin than cold storage. Either you choose to do it or you outsource that to someone else.
That is up to the individual.
English

@ProofOfMoney You guys were banging the drum about cold storage!!!
English

@ProofOfMoney Email provider can always restore from backups. I suspect that is what happened here.
