Sometimes no-coiners need help to understand just how profound Bitcoin's scarcity really is. A small thread👇

17.39 Bitcoin swiped😢 You all know him. Solid Bitcoin educator. Been here a long time. You've enjoyed his posts. But he was scammed by Coldcard. Not Bitcoin. And not self-custody. It think he took advantage of the bear market back in 2022. This was after the Terra/Luna collapse in May 2022... the Celsius freeze in June... and the Three Arrows Capital blow up in July. Bitcoin hovered around 20k. From my understanding he made all of these purchases on the same exchange about 4 years ago, and then transferred them into his own wallet, generated from a single-sig Coldcard key. But just a few days ago, due to blatant negligence of epic proportions on Coldcard's side (not performing the function they purported to), his Bitcoin was swiped. You'd think he'd know better as an educator. And he does. As horrific as this is, it's a smaller percentage of his holdings, and he's mostly in multi-signature wallets... thankfully. But it still hurts. It still represents a lot of sacrifices he made to save that amount. (he said I could post without doxxing him, so sharing that it happens to the best of us) This makes him the 5th largest victim so far.

@1914ad @nvk The silence is insane. There should be 24/7 phone lines with 30 employees, free Trezors or Bitboxes (etc) for literally ANYONE who requests one, 24/7 LIVE tech spaces, and one big warning on their site with NOTHING for sale!

I’m literally waiting in the parking lot for the person who parked next to me to move so I can get into my car lol. There are over 50 open spots in the lot, but this person parked so close to me that I cannot get into my car. I decided to take it as a divine message to just wait and talk to the person rather than climbing through my hatch. We’ll see what happens. ☠️🤦‍♀️😜

“we are being actively targeted by what appear to be multiple resourceful groups while we race to deploy fixes.” ‘Then they fight you’ stage?
Boltz - Non-Custodial Bitcoin Bridge@Boltzhq

Update: Boltz will stay disabled until further notice. Our API remains available to process refunds cooperatively. In any case, unilateral refunds will work, as they do not depend on our infrastructure. Our support team stays reachable. To be clear: this is not a response to a single incident. Over the past months we have seen a steady rise in automated, AI-assisted probing of our infrastructure, and we have dealt with several exploits. Each was contained, but the pattern is clear: attackers now iterate faster than a team our size can find and patch. In the past few days alone we saw a drastic acceleration, and we do not believe this asymmetry will reverse. After reviewing the results of our own recent security scans, we cannot responsibly re-enable Boltz swaps, especially as we are being actively targeted by what appear to be multiple resourceful groups while we race to deploy fixes. What we are seeing is a major paradigm shift for Bitcoin services operating on an open source stack, and it needs careful analysis. Do not expect swap services to resume shortly. To be explicit: no user funds were ever at risk. Boltz is non-custodial by design. And as a fully bootstrapped company, the losses were ours alone. We don't know yet how things will continue from here, but we'll keep you posted as soon as we have had the time to catch our breath and make a decision 🙏

@ProofOfMoney How do you know these are thefts? What is the fingerprint you are looking for that tells you these are coldcard thefts and not regular transactions?

Devastating. 4,312 Bitcoin addresses wiped as of this post. Here’s 280 of the highest balance addresses so far (in orange) and the exact time and block they were stolen from.

Coldcard “never retains your personal information.” This was supposedly another benefit of this device. This is why they said they couldn’t contact Bitcoin customers when this exploit happened 4 days ago. But now (4 days too late!!) they are suddenly emailing all of their customers. Unbelievable. Just received this from a purchase I made 4 years ago (bought a BlockClock). Failure across the board 😢

@ProofOfMoney I hear from spaces that they had newsletter when you bought their products. There was an opt out if you didn't want it. Is this how they are contacting people? Just curious

I've been pounding the table for close to 10 years now on the importance of a multi-signature setup for your Bitcoin. Videos, articles, posts, books. Many of us can't verify everything. So we have to DISTRIBUTE the trust to MINIMIZE it. I believe multi-sig achieves that. Many choices (Unchained, Theya, Swan, Casa, Nunchuk, Liana, Anchor Watch, BitVault, etc). All essentially do the same thing by holding a backup key for you (and some do more if you want). You have 3 different keys, with 3 different sets of entropy generation from 3 different security models/companies. And you have the option to put those keys where you want, including with an agent (or into the future) if you desire. Any of those companies above will walk you through the process. And if you find that process too daunting... don't self-custody. Although Bitcoin is for everyone, self-custody has never been.

@London_lasvegas There is literally no other way to hold Bitcoin than cold storage. Either you choose to do it or you outsource that to someone else. That is up to the individual.
