@GutOptimized That was one of only a small handful of 2009 records left, so I think we all expected it to go down sometime soon. The unexpected thing was the timing during the season - this wasn't really a peaking meet for anybody. Makes you wonder how much he has in the tank later.

Cam McEvoy ascended to a gold medal at the Olympics and now has broken the world record in 50m after controversially reducing his training volume by 90%.
This completely bucked traditional swimming methods and he struggled to even find a coach willing to help him implement this idea.
He studied the science of weight lifting and cycling, and decided traditional swimming training wasn't ideal for 50m event.
I found this interesting and lends credit to some models people in the science based fitness community discuss. Namely that less volume, with more intensity, and focusing on rest/recovery, has its advantages.

It is so interesting to see what coaches are thinking and saying about Cam McEvoy's training and how it should relate to teenagers/age groupers.
And you read all the same answers from people about building the base, they need to swim more than 1 event, Cam has a huge base, not every kid is a sprinter, blah blah blah.
Not a single coach said, "We have a special group of swimmers that like to sprint and we are doing 100% sprint stuff."
IT'S ABOUT KEEPING AGE GROUP SWIMMERS IN THE SPORT!
But here's the proof that swimming - at least at the high school level - continues to grind and pound and destroy sprinters - just like we always have.
