It’s fun. Worldly. Still a bit bohemian. I often compare it to Thessaloniki, which is an amazing place, but the combination of the Eurocrisis and the pandemic impoverished it. And the subsequent tourist push have drained it of a lot of color.

Athens has transformed over the last quarter century. The 2004 Olympics and related infrastructure. the continued concentration of Greeks and government into Athens. And then the massive shipping wealth boom over the last half decade on the back of the Ukraine war have driven it.

I consider it to be a huge tell if someone doesn’t like Athens. It’s not a hyper-manicured or Disneyfied European capital. It’s a real, living place with some of the best food and nightlife in the world alongside the most breathtaking antiquities in existence.
