@Cannibal phone's camera is doing no favors to the color palette, but I finished a quilt top over the weekend! it's for a friend's impending baby & the flower appliques are optimized for safely grabbing and chewing on =)

It's #makeShitMonday! I want to see your projects for the last week, cooking, hacking, crafting, coding, wood/metal work. Anything goes. This week a friend came over to learn how to weld, this was flux core mig and they did really well. Also pie. Show me what you got!

@xsphi well yeah, it's that thing where for any piece of advice, there are some people who'll get closer to a given goal by taking the opposite of the advice. those who consider themselves normal too little should try more; those who do it too much should try less.

if you're reading this you are not normal, you never have been normal and you never will be normal also, if you're reading this, you're smart enough to unravel the nuances of your preferences in ways far more sophisticated than mean regressionmaxxing

@ManishEarth oh right *that* gradient... yep, there's the angle from which it's a real meaningful thing worth disassembling, but also the angle from which thinkers who use it are less likely to accomplish useful stuff with it than they would've with a better model of the world.

@QEDunham I mean nobody says "women do that so it's not as real" but people do often tend to view fields as "less serious" the more women there are in them, which is just sexism

@ManishEarth yep tech selects for non-standard traits... & we probably have more experience than most in exactly what happens if you pretend that your test cases (i mean sample) actually covered everything that happens irl

@mycoliza mother cows routinely construct systems that, after some time and nutrition and addition of a bit of DNA, make their own baby cows and start emitting milk from pipe-like structures underneath. oh, you mean a plastic pipe? for the milk to do in it what milk does at room temp?

startup idea: a pipe that delivers milk directly to my house so i never run out of milk to make my latte in the morning. who’s building this?

@DukeMcFrenzy @Cannibal nice! I guess mounting the batteries on the headband wouldn't work because even thin wires would spoil the floating illusion?

@Cannibal ignore the mess, but i built a wall to protect the porch gym from having rain blow in and rust things... it'll last longer than the current porch decking so i can just rethink it all at once later on

@ag_dubs i think business models are supposed to involve reasons why people should pay money to you in particular, so openness or lack thereof is probably not the whole story. joyous contempt intersects the "any excuse to be joyous" and "any excuse to be contemptuous" philosophies...

research q: what do you think "open source is not a business model" means and why do people say it with such joyous contempt

@tessnightly the social norms in play were shaped by a world where each person had relatively few employers within commuting distance though

@Cannibal neglected to take any photos, but this weekend I was on a Making Clothes Bigger kick. Took a thrifted dress from XS to approximately L, and turned some skinny jeans into wide-leg ones by frankensteining in a complementary fabric scavenged from some different thrifted pants :D

@jamonholmgren Best reason to implement email/pass in 2024 is if you're phishing for peoples' default passwords. SSO or magic link. Supporting SSO from several providers (google, apple, github, facebook) should cover the "but I don't wanna use this SSO for that site" bases.

I'm building auth for my todo app, should I use email/pass only, or also enable SSO with Gmail etc? Any strong opinions about SSO vs email/pass auth?

@Cannibal nope, so far they're just presents for people I like. Speaking of which, want some bee dice if/when I go collect more discarded bees and pour another batch?

Hey hey it's #MakeShitMonday! What have you been working on? It can be whatever. Crafts, construction, prints, food, anything goes lets see it. This week I welded up a quick and dirty Olympic weight plate stand out of some scrap metal. Show me what you got!
Cannibal 🎃@Cannibal

Done for now. Just need to grind down my garbage welds and maybe throw some paint on it. This gets my weights off the floor in a compact tidy way and reduces some of the scrap metal pile. Does this count as #hackerfit?

@remeranAuthor sometimes when you pour boiling water over a toothbrush the bristles magically put themselves back into the brand-new configuration... not all of them, some melt, but the ones where that works are awesome
