📋 FINDING 3⃣ – Districts and schools rapidly escalate disciplinary responses to force dress code compliance, threatening students with detention, suspension, removal to Alternate Learning Centers, and even referrals to court.

📋 FINDING 2⃣ – These codes empower school staff to make decisions about what they think is “inappropriate.” Adults then use the justification that certain clothing + appearance is “disruptive” to learning... in order to then disrupt the learning of the students they target.

📋 FINDING 1⃣ – Overwhelmingly, these dress codes prohibited clothing that school staff say is "too revealing” or “immodest,” with specific bans on spaghetti straps and tube tops, and a wide range of meticulous rules for “acceptable” lengths of dresses, skirts, and shorts.

Nothing “distracting,” “indecent,” or “risquè.” No “headwraps,” “large purses,” or “make-up.” We audited student dress codes across the state of New York and those are but a few of the absurd rules we found. 📋 Today we’re releasing our new report: bit.ly/GGE-SSE

Wonderful news! Thank you Assembly Member Reyes for being a champion for all the young people and others who will benefit from this when it becomes law. 🎉
Assembly Member Karines Reyes, R.N.@KarinesReyes87

Today, The Incorrigible Bill (A5873) passed in the Assembly! "The word incorrigible is an antiquated terminology that has no place in our family courts." Thank you to @SalazarSenate for your leadership as you passed the sister bill in the Senate, & @GGENYC for their advocacy!

.@NYCMayor this morning said, "we know how important it is to move our school system forward." @BrianLehrer #AskTheMayor how directing $20 million in public funds towards policing students moves us forward? #NoNewSSAs
Dignity in Schools Campaign NY@DSC_NY

.@BrianLehrer #AskTheMayor @BilldeBlasio why he is prioritizing school cops over young people? Why can’t @NYCMayor find a more equitable, just, responsible way to spend $20 million instead of funding more school cops? #NoNewSSAs
