@AntiTyrant1789 @Jasonoclez @RAWigger I never argued against returning to 1850 (that was the year you indicated, right?), but the US was on a trajectory in 1850 that led to today. If we could return to 1850, we'd have to make some big changes to avoid the decline to where we are now all over again.

Birth control fundamentally changed the relationship between men and women, and NOT for the better.
Before the pill, sex had consequences. Men had to commit before they could access a woman's body. Marriage was the price of admission.
The pill removed that. Now men get all the benefits of intimacy with none of the responsibility. Why would a man commit when he can have casual relationships indefinitely?
The result: marriage rates have plummeted. Birth rates are below replacement in EVERY Western country. Men delay commitment while women spend their most fertile years hoping casual relationships will "turn into something."
And the pharmaceutical companies profit from both sides — selling the pill to prevent babies, then selling IVF to women in their late 30s who desperately want them.
You were never liberated. You were made into a customer.

in 1988 a physicist named Jack Crenshaw got tired of compiler textbooks being unreadable
so he wrote his own tutorial on a BBS called "Let's Build a Compiler"
he starts from a parser that handles exactly one digit and adds one feature per installment until you have a real compiler at the end

Also, no one had to worry about his wife coming out of the closet, leaving, and turning their kids trans. Whatever freedoms the left genuinely believes would be lost, I'd give them up in exchange for that peace of mind.

Codex just saved me three nights of work! I am thoroughly impressed with Codex! My Master of Magic remake project now loads saved game files! I spent three nights writing the serialization code, and Codex needed less than 20 minutes to write the loader!

Everything was so easy to read, even on low resolution monitors. Sure, it wasn't stable enough, and the search function (before they ruined it) is nice to have, but they really just focused on usability with the graphic design of Win2000.

@usuallypregnant Let's just fix the divorce laws. Perhaps that will incentivize some women who did marry at age 20 (like my ex-wife) to stay married, or at least, with fault-based divorce laws, a divorced man in his early/mid thirties can still have a chance at finding a second wife here.

The reason why the divorce rates are so high nowadays is partly because people wait too long to get married.
Why wait until your 30s to get married, when you have more baggage and your personality is more set in stone?
When you get married at 20, you grow with your spouse. You're starting your marriage at zero and building your life together. Neither of you has 15 years of living alone, set in your ways, unwilling to compromise. No prenup arguments.
By the time your 30 year old friends are still swiping on Tinder wondering why no one wants to commit, you already have a home, a family, and a man who has loved you through your entire adult life.
Most young women, if they had to choose just one, would rather have the perfect marriage than the perfect job. But they take steps on a day-to-day basis to get better at their career, and make no intentional effort to get closer to a good marriage.
You will never be more fertile or more adaptable than you are right now. Stop waiting for the perfect moment. It doesn't exist.
