Day 66 — Top 10 teams at the @Qualcomm_Dev × @Meta × @PyTorch Hackathon This hackathon taught me the difference between AI and AI: Artificial Intelligence vs. Actual Intelligence. This was one of the first hackathons where I consciously told myself: Regardless of the outcome, I’m here to learn as much as possible. Two people made that very easy: Siddartha Pothapragada and Derrick Johnson. I spoke with both of them early on to flush out the idea. My original idea was complex. They helped me refine it. They helped me think clearly. They helped me simplify what actually mattered. Then later, I hit a roadblock with Claude Code. Claude kept telling me that a certain upload/VLM workflow was not possible. So I went back to Siddartha Pothapragada and Derrick Johnson and asked them. They explained how it should be done. I came back, gave that direction to Claude Code, and Claude basically apologized and said: “You’re right. This is the way.” That moment stayed with me. It reminded me that even in an AI-heavy world, we still need actual intelligence: experience, judgment, taste, intuition, and people who have seen enough to know when the model is wrong. What stood out even more was their attitude. I asked a lot of questions. Probably too many 😄 But they kept helping. They made it easy to be curious. That is rare. Our team ended up being recommended into the Top 10 by Lauren Lunde, Neeraj Kumar Singh Beshane, and Derrick Johnson J., which gave us the chance to present our tool. I was really excited about that. Unfortunately, we did not win. But honestly, this was the first hackathon where the losing didn't really feel like losing. And that matters. Because I was slowly changing how I think about hackathons. Winning is great. But if every hackathon becomes a training ground — for building, pitching, asking better questions, understanding technical constraints, and learning from people ahead of you — then even a loss compounds. And thank you to the @Qualcomm_Dev , @Meta , @PyTorch ,@github ,@Samsung , @lablabai, @ Bright _Data and @HackerSquadSF teams for creating a space where builders could learn, build, and push themselves.
