The problem is that high earning careers tend to be short lived careers, and people who lose their jobs due to layoffs as high earners tend struggle to find same salary level work ageism is wildly common! if you have a high earning career broadly you should be saving a lot
Boring_Business@BoringBiz_

The FIRE (financial independence retire early) movement has done an immense amount of harm to society This is coming from someone who used to be a believer in FIRE, but I have realized just how much of a fallacy it is, as I have grown older Taking a bunch of high potential income earners and convincing them that their life goal should be to pursue a net worth that allows them to check out of society is immensely damaging to the social fabric Many of these people sit on the upper echelon of office jobs, have built great businesses, or are at the top of their field in their career field They should be inspired to continue doing what they are best at, and ultimately, mentor and give back to the next generation who want to pursue those same goals Instead, many of these FIRE folks become wandering retirees with a meaningless life who are trying to grasp on to money as their north star It is a false sense of security and accomplishment. Becoming wealthy should never be a goal in the first place. It should have always been to pursue something that adds meaning to your own life and to society It is a completely fallacy to believe that retiring will be your source of happiness. More often than not, it has the complete opposite effect

When I got older and watched Highway to Heaven, I discovered his exact same emotional arc in every episode of that show as well. I avoided both shows as much as possible. This has never been a popular opinion, but for the life of me I don't know how anyone could stand to watch

You guys, there's something I need to tell you. As a small child growing up in the '80s, I.... absolutely hated the Little House on the Prairie TV show. I loved the books, but Michael Landon forced the same emotional arc for every single episode. I felt manipulated and sad.

I’m not a welder. I’m a guy who in the course of my job learned basic welding, and it’s a huge difference in skill but I love it. It’s fun, and I really want to go farther with it

@BrodieOnLinux I had one of those in the 90s. Had to crack it myself but thankfully the manufacturer really thought it was a good idea to let firmware update software run before you had entered a valid password.

Cashies sold me a fucking BIOS locked laptop, I don't even know why they had this thing. It's old, there's a tool to crack the BIOS password on this thing, but they're stupid

Bike theft is one of the reasons people don't bike. Dealing with how secure they need to be locked is a pain, and any pain point reduces biking. Plus with e-bikes it's financially significant when one is stolen.

Why is it so hard for people to understand that everyone in the entire world does not think and behave like they do?

@hollowearthterf Men and women can never be real friends of course, because the sex variable is always there and men are always playing the long game, sometimes unconsciously, and they are wise to do so bc she *will* f*ck him eventually, even if it takes literal years

a classical music student turned in her final exam to the professor, and said "this covered a lot of knowledge, but i noticed that the most commonly played bowed stringed instrument wasn't discussed" the professor replied "that's because violins is never the answer"

@JosiahWittrock I like to play the game you use to get that game. Ya know the one I mean? You add games to your wish list and it tells you when they've gone down in price, but you never buy them.

@thejolson @peachsweet_tea No matter how many times we explain engagement bait to people online they'll always fall for it. The people want to be engaged and they don't care if it's just bait.

@StatisticUrban You're raising prices for everyone else who does haggle. Merchants will set up so only tourists will shop there, reducing availability for locals.

I don't really haggle when I'm traveling in the developing world, unless it's really engregious. I know that you technically can, and I am definitely overpaying. But, like, that $5 means a hell of a lot more to them than it does to me.

bike theft is especially antisocial bc it's easy to do and the trouble it causes falls directly on individual innocent people burglary is risky (and thus rare); shoplifting is a matter for corporate loss prevention, but if your bike gets stolen, you'll stress about it for years
Maid(evil)@MalloryMable

Psychotic position. "Jail bike thieves". Catching a bike thief is both difficult to begin with and made harder by cops thinking riding a bike is gay. The solution to bike theft doesn't start with a camera on every corner and jailing people for 200 dollars of property crime

I think one of the fundamental problems in modern society is that many people have not been meaningfully challenged since leaving school at 16. No one has pulled them aside to say, "You can do better." So they drift through life without accountability, encouragement or direction.

America’s population should largely be in California. Coastal CA is essentially the Garden of Eden and it’s filled with NIMBYs who deprive the rest of the country of the opportunity to live in paradise.
Kevin A. Bryan@Afinetheorem

Today in Cali: I'm in Monterey. Weather is lovely. Bungalows are $1.4m, literally. I didn't pass a single building that looks like it was built in the last 25 years. Population has fallen 9% since 1990. All these facts due to "you can't build houses". People should be furious!
