The FIRE (financial independence retire early) movement has done an immense amount of harm to society This is coming from someone who used to be a believer in FIRE, but I have realized just how much of a fallacy it is, as I have grown older Taking a bunch of high potential income earners and convincing them that their life goal should be to pursue a net worth that allows them to check out of society is immensely damaging to the social fabric Many of these people sit on the upper echelon of office jobs, have built great businesses, or are at the top of their field in their career field They should be inspired to continue doing what they are best at, and ultimately, mentor and give back to the next generation who want to pursue those same goals Instead, many of these FIRE folks become wandering retirees with a meaningless life who are trying to grasp on to money as their north star It is a false sense of security and accomplishment. Becoming wealthy should never be a goal in the first place. It should have always been to pursue something that adds meaning to your own life and to society It is a completely fallacy to believe that retiring will be your source of happiness. More often than not, it has the complete opposite effect

I’m convinced that a large % of programmers don’t actually like computers. As a side effect, are also perfectly happy to throw away their reasoning to a model as soon as they can. I don’t get it, at ALL. Don’t you *LIKE* understanding the magic of the machine? You do realize hand-programming (I hate that I even have to specify hand now) is fun…right?

@hollowearthterf Men and women can never be real friends of course, because the sex variable is always there and men are always playing the long game, sometimes unconsciously, and they are wise to do so bc she *will* f*ck him eventually, even if it takes literal years

I hate to admit it but it’s actually cheaper to eat out everyday. Buying the ingredients for one meal run you at least $100.

6 years as a firefighter taught me that if you wear your seatbelt, it is very difficult to die in a car crash, even a relatively high speed one. It also taught me that it is very easy to die if you are not wearing a seatbelt. I can't tell you how many times I was first on scene to a 50+ mph crash, even head on or rollovers, and the cars were smashed to shit, but everyone in the cars was completely fine, not much more than some scratches or bruises. In many cases, all occpants were out of the vehicles and walking around before we even got there. But if anyone wasn't wearing their seatbelt, they were seriously fucked up or dead on arrival.

Psychotic position. "Jail bike thieves". Catching a bike thief is both difficult to begin with and made harder by cops thinking riding a bike is gay. The solution to bike theft doesn't start with a camera on every corner and jailing people for 200 dollars of property crime

Today in Cali: I'm in Monterey. Weather is lovely. Bungalows are $1.4m, literally. I didn't pass a single building that looks like it was built in the last 25 years. Population has fallen 9% since 1990. All these facts due to "you can't build houses". People should be furious!

The notion that trains are some outmoded, obsolete type of transportation is just nuts. Trains will always have a geometrical advantage over cars in dense areas, even with self-driving cars.
