Title: AI and Frontier Science Research Speaker: Stephen Hsu (Michigan State University) Venue: Classroom B725, Shuangqing Complex Building A Time: 13:30-14:30, Mar 10 (Tuesday) Abstract: I discuss the current capabilities of frontier AI models in science research. In late 2025 I published a theoretical physics paper in which the main ideas originated from an AI model. Since then, similar results have been reported by other physicists and mathematicians. I will describe my research example, including the “Generator-Verifier” architecture (“agent harness”) that enables far stronger model performance than one-shot prompts that most users are familiar with. I will also discuss my experience working with AI labs to improve model performance in frontier research.

GPS pioneer and mathematician Gladys West has died. She was 95. Her calculations helped produce extremely accurate modeling of the Earth's shape, laying the foundation for modern global positioning system technology. West was born in rural Virginia during segregation. In 1956, she was hired as a computer programmer at a Navy base in Virginia, where she was one of only four Black employees. Her work went largely unrecognized for years, though she was later acknowledged as one of the hidden figures of the era. Despite being considered the mother of GPS, West said she still preferred using a paper map when driving.

🇨🇳 I was expecting the air to be better because they said it was improved a lot with electric scooters and public transport all electric And it was better but still bad, we're in winter now so that doesn't help To compare like 10 years ago in China I'd see 250 AQI, now it's 100 to 150, so yes better but still unliveably bad essentially! I hear in the spring and summer it's better
