There is some potential link between olecranon spurs and UCL pathology. Here's why: At peak layback, valgus torque (the force gapping the inner elbow) simultaneously loads the elbow in two ways: it stretches the medial side (UCL, Pic 4 A) while compressing the posterior/lateral compartment (Pic 4 B). These aren't two separate events, they're two sides of the same coin, happening at the same moment in the delivery. This means the posterior elbow is accumulating compressive stress every single throw, even when the UCL is healthy. Over time, the body responds to that repeated compression by remodeling bone in the area (Wolff's Law), and that's where olecranon spurs and loose bodies come from. The olecranon gets driven into the fossa rep after rep, and the body lays down calcium in response (Pic 3). If the UCL becomes compromised (partial tearing or simply "stretched out"), research from @drchrisahmad showed that posterior elbow pressure increases (Pic 1). So a weakening UCL doesn't just put the medial elbow at risk. It accelerates the changes happening on the back side, too. Worth noting - some theorize that bone spurs are protective to a point (indirectly increasing elbow stability and reducing the potential for elbow hyperextension in ultra lax throwers). Most docs won't remove them unless they are symptomatic. TL;DR: Bone spurs and UCLs are linked, and I wouldn't say baseball has "figured out" anything here. Yes, you could just have players get super pushy/dart throwy and likely offload a bit of medial elbow loading, but this doesn't eliminate the loading, it just shifts it to other areas (bicep/tricep issues, shoulder impingement, etc). drahmadsportsmedicine.com/what-every-pit…

Perhaps there has been some figuring out of how to keep UCLs somewhat protected & "elbow bone spurs" (generally speaking) are now the new health frontier for the top end velo SPs. Thoughts, @CJNitkowski @PitchingNinja @TreadAthletics @drivelinekyle @MavenBaseball ?

What this spotlight doesn’t say is that Colin can flat out pitch. Great competitor with an attack mentality.
