Lawmakers from East and West Tennessee weren't happy about it. "Some of the West Tennessee state representatives were mad about the amount of state money being spent in Middle Tennessee, and so one of these gentlemen wrote a paper saying it has been said that all roads lead to Rome, but in Tennessee, they all lead to Nashville," Busey said. East Tennessee wanted to break away and call itself the State of Franklin. The region of East Tennessee actually existed as the State of Franklin from 1784 to 1788. Congress rejected their request to become an official state. West Tennessee had its own plans. "And guess what they were going to name their state? Jacksonian," Busey said. But the movements didn't last long. The General Assembly in its wisdom ultimately started spending money building roads in east and west Tennessee, and so those two separate statehood movements died out," Busey said.
