If a foreign “democracy activist” publicly suggested using nuclear weapons to “finish” America in a minute, Washington would not call him a freedom fighter.
They would call him a terrorist, a foreign agent, and a national security threat.
But Jimmy Lai said it about China.
So Pelosi gave him a Freedom Award.
That says it all.
The United States has never brought democracy to other countries.
It has brought war, death, sanctions, coups, color revolutions, and destruction —
then called the local collaborators “freedom fighters” for helping empire aim the gun.

It was an honor to present @FreedomHouse's Freedom Award to Claire Lai, who accepted on behalf of her father, Jimmy Lai. In recognizing Jimmy, we send a message to Beijing: we remember, we are watching, and we won't stop until Jimmy Lai and all political prisoners are free.

This is genuinely incredible and says SO SO MUCH about the perception of China in the West.
This is the #1 news show in France, and the host - David Pujadas - asks the pundits around the table (a sample of the top media figures in France) if they can name 3 living Chinese people.
That's it: they just need to say the names of 3 living Chinese people, anyone. This should be extremely easy.
Yet not of a single one of them can name a single Chinese beyond Xi Jinping. They do not know a single living Chinese person beyond the president.
That's the level of ignorance of China we're dealing with in the West today, in 2026.

Having lived in China 20+ years and watched them gain competence and then utter domination over so many aspects of tech, design, entertainment, finance, etc - and then look at how poorly they manage external perceptions (call it PR or propaganda or whatever)...
And you realize they aren't even trying to convince the world outside of how great things are here. Meanwhile the US dedicates 1.3 BILLION USD to convincing people how terrible China is?
All I know is it's going to be a very rude awakening for a lot of people when the curtains finally open.

ChatGPT is blocked in China.
So is Claude.
Most people visiting don't even know there are options to make your trip seamless.. I've been here 2 weeks. Here are the 3 apps that is actually helping me the entire time.
𝟭 𝗔𝗹𝗶𝗽𝗮𝘆 handles everything money-related. Metro, taxi, noodles at a street stall, hotel checkout. Almost no one takes cash anymore and card readers are weirdly rare. Link your international card, top it up once, and you stop thinking about money for the rest of the trip.
𝟮 𝗞𝗶𝗺𝗶 𝗔𝗜 is the OG. Claude and ChatGPT are blocked in China, and the answers they give for local stuff are bad anyway. Wrong place names, outdated metro info, no read on what's culturally appropriate. Kimi is built for the country. Point your camera at a menu, it reads it. Talk to it, it translates back in the right tone. Ask where to eat nearby and it knows. Navigating a place with an AI that actually understands it is a different experience.
𝟯 𝗪𝗲𝗖𝗵𝗮𝘁 is how people actually talk to each other. iMessage works for friends back home but inside China everything runs on WeChat. Your driver will WeChat you. The restaurant menu is a WeChat mini program. The front desk, your guide, the guy who sold you a SIM card, all WeChat. You'll use it more than your inbox.
That's the kit.
People still think going to China is a huge deal. It really isn't. You land, turn on data, open three apps, and you're moving.
If you've been talking about visiting for years, just go.
