Had the privilege of interviewing John Sterling twice. Easily the most nervous I’ve ever been. Just being around the guy was a memory I’ll never forget. Story after story, and so generous with his time.
And yes, one of these interviews we got because Tommy had his number from his Fordham days and gave it a shot. John responded “sureee come on by.” We waited in the lobby suspiciously, and then he popped out of the pool in a towel greeting us before heading upstairs to change, singing out loud as he strolled away.
The man loved his life and let everyone know it with every word he spoke into a microphone.

And to get selfish: in March 2020 a week before the world shut down, @TomScibelli @BarstoolHubbs @martymush and I went to Yankees Spring Training, and I got to set up the cams for a 40 minute sit down interview with John Sterling. It was by far the most nervous I had been in my time at Barstool so far, both because I was sitting in the presence of a legend, but also because I was terrified I would mess up the setup and ruin 3 Yankees fans getting the chance to talk to a legend like Sterling. Happy to have this tape exist, and thankful to be at a place like Barstool where these opportunities are made possible to someone like me who at the time was a year out of college barely knowing what I was doing. youtu.be/uG_9jNGrFR0?si…

Easily my favorite personal Sterling memory: I asked John to make a home run call for my Dad as his Father’s Day present about 8 or 9 years ago. With absolutely no hesitation, he freestyled this HR call off the dome. My dad to this day tells me it was the greatest gift he’d ever gotten.

Words can’t really describe the sadness. Mr. Sterling always treated me like an equal. I grew up listening to him, then I became a colleague. It’s truly a pinch yourself moment when one of your role models and inspirations in the business becomes a friend. He will be missed

We are saddened by the passing of former New York Yankees broadcaster John Sterling. Through his unique style and passionate play-by-play calls, Sterling endeared himself to generations of players and fans as radio voice of the Yankees from 1989 to 2024. His signature punctuation of Yankees victories included calling the final out of five World Series championships. Sterling’s seven-decade broadcasting career also included stints with the Atlanta Braves and Hawks, the New York Nets and Islanders, and the Baltimore Bullets. He was 87 years old.
