@cinemetary @GWrestlingz The poor girl literally had her soul plucked straight from her body against her will and even gets possessed by an entity without her consent all because Bear was too much of a coward to face possible rejection, it's really a sad and morbid movie when you think about it.

idc about movie discourse but i do think we need to wake it up that bear from obsession IS a rapist and nikki is a victim. he took that woman’s autonomy and then was upset that she didn’t act exactly the way he wanted her to + didn’t want her anymore and yes it is that deep

@BeautifulSOAB @PalmyrPar Because Lucas was also a businessman, and from a standpoint of brand management knew that playing nice with the EU was good for SW's brand If Lucas saw the EU as canon, why did he undo so much of it with TCW? almost every TCW story was pitched by Lucas

@RJSWtrilogyWhen @PalmyrPar Why bother doing that if he never considered it canon? That makes no sense. That'd be like if Tolkien was still alive today, wrote a sequel to Lord of the Rings, and included easter eggs to the Shadow of Mordor games and Rings of Power.

I think Andor is the best Star Wars can get without Lucas. You’re not going to get the unique genius of the original auteur, and trying to recreate it has been a ridiculous disaster. The best you can do is this sort of grim, new wave interpretation of an existing world that’s good as its own thing.
Kevin Lamb@KevinLamb74

I don't know who needs to hear this, but Andor's grim portrayal of homicidal rebels was dumb. Screw Luthen, Saw Gerrera, and Andor himself. Star Wars is a fairy tale. The good guys are good. Han in ANH and Lando in ESB is as gray as they get (which is to say, not very.) To say that the ends justify the means misses the entire point of Anakin's fall.

@ghoulhag I dont have the film in front me me obviously, but this seems slightly too harsh on Bear. Once he realizes its not her and that shes trapped, doesnt he try to stop it? He doesnt realize for a while that her sudden onset of attraction is due to the wish

It’s not even ambiguous, she outright says he’s taking advantage of her, he continues to use her and his only regret was that she wasn’t behaving like his fantasy of her and he wanted to keep her compliant by altering his wish like she’s a faulty product
DiscussingFilm@DiscussingFilm

Curry Barker says ensuring that Nikki is accurately portrayed as a victim in ‘OBSESSION’ was just as important as making her scary in the film. “What you’re left with is a really tragic story about a man & a woman & leaning into the realism of that was really important.”

@CPthreeio like, Fury Road isnt some wildly thought provoking film, but its really well constructed and does a ton with a pretty thin (on paper) story, so my brain stays engaged the whole time

@CPthreeio Ill have to wait until I see the movie (opening weekend probably) before making any conclusion, I guess I mean more generally that people hold franchise films and kids films to too low a standard. Also execution plays a bigger role here than anything else

My take is that I agree with you but i don’t concede the movie should be engaged with this way. “The new Republic needs an inside man with the hutts“is doing things politically and theme wise, even if you had to read between the lines to get it. So is season three, so is solo
Recovering Star Wars fan@RJSWtrilogyWhen

@robby_weidemann my lukewarm take is that it doesnt, because no movie should be like that If a movie like raiders of the lost ark can exist, a fun accessible action movie that you can leave your brain on for, then why do we need a turn your brain off kind of film?

State Sen. Kelda Roys, who is running for governor, comes out against this framework, calling it a "backroom deal" and saying it is Robin Vos' "final 'screw you' to working families" by setting the "state's projected surplus on fire."

Gov. Evers announces the framework of a "blockbuster deal" negotiated with the leaders of the Republican-controlled legislature. Per press release, it "will be paid for using a small portion of the state’s readily available state surplus."

Saw this at the Milwaukee Film Festival and its great (though warranting a content warning for those who need it, my gf was in tears for the wrong reasons). It isnt at all subtle in it, but is very successful in showing Nikki as a victim without overly demonizing Bear

@ducksuprem4cist @gill_zer0 @richard_normal This can remain true though in that context. Max doesnt become any less Mad or mysterious throughout fury road, but he does experience some form of character growth. he wouldnt have to redeem, but if he becomes anything more than a glorified extra w/cool armor he needs something

it’s a good bit that instead of just making a boba fett show, disney made a show about a new guy who is exactly like boba fett and gave him a show. then they also made a boba fett show. and that show crossed over with the show with the new guy. it’s just good brand strategy.

@BeautifulSOAB @PalmyrPar he would sometimes look things up so that if he was doing something the EU had already done he could give it the same name or description as a fun treat for EU fans. the story was never canon to him

@TSoS_ Most of us hoped it would be more/better than that, and the director himself implied it would be too. Im gonna see it for myself but still, a movie should be a movie, not 4 episodes stitched together

To no one's surprise, every review from a non-Star Wars fan account is calling the Mandalorian and Grogu out for what the marketing has suggested for almost a year: This movie is a few episodes of the series stitched together. Apparently there's no narrative tissue that even connects it to the three Seasons of the series; its a strategic move through and through, testing the waters for Star Wars on the big screen after 7 years of absence and allowing everyone to see it, even those who never got past the first episode of the series. I'm fine with watching an Indiana Jones style space adventure and considering the terrible writing of the third Season, it might be for the better that there is no bigger plot here that connects to the series. But I can't help but think the same thing I thought when this movie was announced: Why? Why play it this safe and boring for your return to the big screen? You are STAR WARS. The most groundbreaking movie franchise in history. Why does your movie feel like a TV show? Why does it look like a TV show? These early reviews help to keep my low expectations even further in check. I still find it a very bleak situation and it's sad that I HAVE to root for this film's success at the box office, because only through big, very succesful flagship projects like this one can we even dream of getting something more niche like Andor again.

@sawyeurism to a degree. Depends a lot on if the person seems to be speaking as if their view is an objective one or subjective one. Personally almost anything I ever say about any film should have an implied "in my opinion" slapped to the front of it

@CodyFandom_ eh, the PT was mostly filmed on the fox soundstages in Australia, most of the OT and ST were shot in soundstages in UK. To some degree, a soundstage is a soundstage, keeping those jobs local is a good thing. Its too bad none of it was on location tho

@Colin_d_m depends on the city and frequency, I know here in Milwaukee we have some rail that only gets 1 or 2 trains a day on it. if Atlanta's rails are all busy (or at least busier)

@RJSWtrilogyWhen x.com/Colin_d_m/stat… which unfortunately will be hard the freight companies need their track space
Colin@Colin_d_m

@seanapriori Yes, this can be a big positive for commuter rail but it's contingent on freight rail companies willing to share track for a reasonable price. The last I heard about ATL commuter rail was when the Clayton County line fell apart from failed negotiations with freight companies :/

@thelilmosquito Lucas has a distinct style that I think, due to SW fans being more interested in SW than film, gets missed. Look at THX/American graffiti/ANH and you see a documentary like framing, wide shots with long lenses, static or gentle movements that the action unfolds in. ESB lacks this

@thelilmosquito Kershner's style is very different from Lucas's, anyone who doesn't see it is blind. The whole approach to camera work and visual storytelling if nothing else. But idk if I agree Lucas changes the most to it, the big difference was adding windows to cloud city

The fact there’s people who claim that Irvin Kershner’s direction in Empire is no different from what George Lucas was doing is funny when you consider the Empire Strikes Back special edition is by far and away the one he changed the most about in regards to its formal choices

@gill_zer0 @richard_normal BoBF proved they could make a good story about post Sarlacc Boba, it was just too disorganized to stick the landing. The first 2-3 episodes were a lot of fun, Boba fighting gangs due to a life debt owed to Tusken raiders while also redeeming his own sketchy past could have rocked

@Colin_d_m also, commuter rail works well as a supplement to a well running transit system. only advantage to commuter rail is if it can use existing tracks
