That’s why we are glad to welcome Canada at the European Political Community meeting today to discuss common issues. The relationship between Canada and Europe is only getting stronger. Canada’s participation to the European Political Community meeting says it all. From trade to critical raw materials and defence - our cooperation and Strategic Partnership is expanding fast and going from strength to strength. I also want to thank you for Canada’s support for Ukraine and our joint work to bring abducted children back home.

A free press is essential to democracy. Across the world, journalists are threatened, forced into exile, detained or killed for doing their job, as we have seen in Russia’s war of aggression against Ukraine and in conflicts in the Middle East and Africa.  Disinformation and intimidation continue to undermine independent journalism and the public’s right to know. I just spoke to @POTUS Donald Trump to express my solidarity with him and @FLOTUS after the attempted attack. Thanks to the security services no one was seriously harmed and the injured police officer is recovering. We underlined that political violence has no place in our democracies.

Relieved that everyone who attended, including President Trump, are safe after the shooting at the White House Correspondents’ Dinner. Political violence has no place in a democracy. An event meant to honour a free press should never become a scene of fear. I wish the injured officer a swift recovery.

Since the start of the Middle East conflict, our bill for fossil fuel imports increased by € 25 billion. Without a single molecule more of energy. We need to reduce our overdependency on fossil fuels. Boost clean energy like renewables and nuclear. And electrify Europe. This is the key to security and stability

It began with coal and steel. But from the very start, our Union was always meant to be much more. 75 years ago, in Paris, with the signing of the Treaty of Paris, Europe chose a different path. One of unity over division, of Peace over war. The European Coal and Steel Community was never just an industrial project. It was a project for peace in Europe. A project for shared prosperity. A project for strength and independence in a world of great power competition. The very same purpose that still drives our Union today.
