My favorite part of following Bangladeshi politics is realizing that Hindutvas and Jamatis talk the exact same way with keywords swapped.

The way that poor student was instantly branded “Pakistani” for voicing a concern, says a lot about what we have become. It genuinely makes me wonder whether there is a similar obsession across the border in Pakistan. Are people who raise uncomfortable questions are similarly branded “Indian?”

Pakistan’s greatest quagmire is its lack of ideological clarity. Nearly every major dysfunction in the country can be traced back to it. Incompetence, misplaced priorities, and failures - even those embodied by individuals - exist in every state and system. They can be corrected, punished, managed, or replaced. But a vacuum of ideological clarity cannot. The state, the government, and the people either know what they fundamentally want - or they drift aimlessly. Our ad-hocism, intellectual stagnation, and chronic reactiveness all emerge from this void. Hindutva India, Zionist Israel, civilizational Iran, Communist China - pros and cons aside - possess an unshakable sense of direction. I would wager not even the PM can coherently articulate where Pakistan seeks to stand in 2047, let alone how he will lead it there.
