Sharaab Peh Drama! Government of Jammu and Kashmir's aggregate Excise Revenue in the last 13 years is ₹22,382.32 crore Or an average of ₹1721.71 crore a year. In the last 5 years alone, it is ₹9,386.47 crore. Around 90% of it comes from Jammu Division--particularly Jammu, Udhampur, Samba, Kathua and Rajouri districts. Despite a religion's proscription and general social taboos attached to the manufacturing, sale and consumption, it has a State and a social sanction, particularly in Jammu. If the current competitive cursing of almost all the UT's political parties on "sharaab"-- particularly BJP, PDP, NC-- who have all promoted this trade during their regimes and benefitted from it immensely, is to be construed as a bipartisan consensus, why not get a joint Bill and pass it in the next session of the Legislative Assembly? Till then, why not request the LG to ban it by way of an urgent Ordinance? I bet nobody will do it.

Sharaab Band Jammu & Kashmir is a Union Territory and after 30 October 2019 its ultimate administrative control lies in Delhi. The moment @BJP4India will desire ban on consumption, sale and circulation of liquor in the UT, every single shop and bar in J&K will shut in the next 15 minutes. It needs just a signature or a phone call, not demonstrations on Srinagar's streets.

The demand is real Once you cross a certain income level, custom tailoring becomes the norm (everyday wear) versus the one-off exception (e.g. a wedding outfit). Even outside of this limited audience, custom tailoring is normal for function specific & formal wear - I personally have never been able to fit into a pre-made suit or kurta pyjama set. Several of my friends love shirts from Bombay Shirt Company (BSC) and trousers from The Pant Project (TPP) - premium finish, perfect fit & a feeling of elegance from the service provided. Even to this date, my grandfather goes to the same tailor as his grandfather - shirts are always custom, colors are suggested by the "Master" Therefore, demand always existed; so why haven’t startups worked?

Is tailoring a terrible business? Over ₹250 crore has been invested by VCs into startups offering custom tailoring such as Bombay Shirt Company, The Pant Project, CloudTailor etc. Yet, a decade later, these companies have generated ₹200 crore in losses so far. This feels odd given the local tailor is usually busy, trusted, and (of course) profitable. So, what breaks when tailoring moves from a family-run shop to a VC-funded company?

I don't concur with anything they stand for, but sure, I’m in for this. Alcohol/clubs/pubs should be banned from J&K. Jammu is a Devbhoomi, it must fight to protect its status and heritage.
