How many of you remember the wonder of our childhood, catching a tiny firefly in our palms and watching it glow like a secret star ! Now imagine millions of them lighting up the night at once. In the forests of Anamalai Tiger Reserve, for a few nights each April, millions of fireflies turn the landscape into living constellations, flashing in synchronized waves of light, a surreal, humbling, and absolutely unforgettable spectacle. Research describes these displays as part of an intricate mating ritual that depends on darkness, healthy habitats, native vegetation, and ecological balance. Many of us grew up with fireflies around us, yet across much of India that everyday magic has faded because of light pollution, pesticides, and disappearing green cover. On #EarthDay, let us remember that these disappearing miracles of nature can still be brought back by reviving our landscapes through collective action.
