@welovehistory How naturally regenerating trees sheltering a path were chopped down, or the huge fence blocking off access to the historic Radical Road…. Meanwhile a chronic lack of path maintenance means there is devastating erosion. Shame on you Historic Environment Scotland.

My favourite bit of Holyrood Park trivia? The Radical Road has been closed for more than five years including access to Edinburgh's most important geology. It's only through Freedom of Information requests that people can find out what's happening. Which is pretty much nothing.

Putting it all together Access to nutrients played an important role in plant evolution, with angiosperms displacing cycads from their prior niches. This was revealed by a new tool (N isotopes in fossilized foliage), which can now be applied to other paleo-ecological questions.

Very excited to share a new paper out today that was nearly 10(!) years in the making. It’s a story about an ancient group of plants - cycads - and how they managed to survive to the present day while many of their peers went extinct. 🌿🌴🌺🦖🦕☄️🌏🧬 🧵

@CoastalPaleo @Paige_dePolo @chasmuseum Oh my, that is sad news. “I didn’t see it until I believed it” was one of his expressions I shall never forget. I enjoyed his classes and wit although ended up doing geophysics/structural geology.
