@midn1ghtexigent @MicahDS15 Besides, my main point was that this game is not doing anything revolutionary, and simply mixing the most mainstream/succesful aspects of many others that came before, you've still not proven this wrong

@midn1ghtexigent @MicahDS15 And in my experience the players who enjoyed this game the least were the ones who didn't really fw the parry, yeah they were glad they could build around defense and such, but they weren't enjoying the game as much as I did, the building system wasn't enough to change that.

@midn1ghtexigent @MicahDS15 Once again, this game is excellent, but I still fail to see what is new about all this, its just a mix of the most popular stuff from other RPGs (And an excellent one at that!) but not this second coming that some fans try to pain it as.

@midn1ghtexigent @MicahDS15 I have friends who hate turn based strategies and building and they loved E33 precisely because they didn't have to put almost any thought into that. And guess what, this is also not a new thing, the Mario RPGs are exactly like this!

@midn1ghtexigent @MicahDS15 You're describing why the game is very accessible and easy to get into, and that is indeed one of its most noteworthy aspects, but again, that's not breaking new ground. I think we can praise something amazing without claiming that it's the first/only instance of that, can't we?

@Racsoman7 @MicahDS15 i think its build crafting is pretty exceptional, its somehow extremely flexible while also being streamlined in a sense that its easy to understand for most skill levels

@midn1ghtexigent @MicahDS15 I greatly enjoyed E33 and understand why it's so popular, but every time I ask someone why they think it's this never seen before thing, they just reply with something that has indeed already been seen before, and that is both confusing and hilarious ngl.

@midn1ghtexigent @MicahDS15 Sure but what is revolutionary about that? Sea of Stars is a turn based indie RPG that came out in 2023 as a complete package and a free DLC, is that revolutionary? Hell even Baldur's gate 3 is like this despite being full AAA price. I just don't see why this is so special.

@midn1ghtexigent @MicahDS15 But what is revolutionary about this? This is just the regular indie game (and even some AA games) pricing model, a complete package for less than 60 bucks is not rare at all outside of AAA 😅.

@MicahDS15 what does this have to do with man, my point was that e33 has a really good price tag for todays economy and the fact theres no dlc make it hyper accessible vs Yakuza that launches at 60/70 and 100 dlc that could have clearly been in the game

@Dreamboum Or, the most likely reason, is that you are both right and it's a combination of everything that has been said. Thinking that the popularity/reputation of a product can be explained with just a single point is very naive.

I'm ngl I think E33 selling more than both has more to do with the game releasing for less than 50 dollars at launch rather than $70 with next to no regional pricing, 3 separate editions and 20 different DLCs.
Allodolo@Helloallo1245

@Dreamboum Yeah, but E33 sold a lot more

@JoshStrifeHayes @TheHappyPittie @GillieAmanita These implications are part of the thought experiment itself. If you want them not to be part of it you'd need to change the dilemma, something like a 1000 fully conscious people being forced into the situation, and not the whole world.

@TheHappyPittie @Racsoman7 @GillieAmanita Ok and then we have to consider, would people on life support also be teleported to the room and thus die in the room anyway? Its a thought experiment, not a gotcha creator for the actual process and outcome

I'm a blue-presser HOWEVER I talked to a red-presser and it's not necessarily a selfish or antisocial choice. In that red's mind, blue is guaranteed to lose, because when your life is on the line, they believe more people will press red than was represented in an online poll. 1/

@JoshStrifeHayes @GillieAmanita You are the one claiming these constraints exist, the original question says everyone in the world is making the choice so it's just logical to think about what would become of the world (and yourself) in the multiple possible scenarios.

@Racsoman7 @GillieAmanita We're not talking about 'what world do you want to live in after', the thought experiment has to have constraints, and this is constrained to 'which button', not 'which future world'. Because we already live in a world with a LOT of red button pushers.

@JoshStrifeHayes @GillieAmanita You fail to realize that it is statistically impossible that everyone presses red, with that in mind, pressing blue makes more sense because red winning means the death of millions and total society collapse, which would most probably end in your death sooner than later.

@GillieAmanita The 'victory condition' of pressing blue, is to negate the consequences experienced by pressing blue. It enters you into a system where the 'win', is to be removed from the danger of the system. So the 'win condition of blue', can be instantly achieved, by pressing red.

@theArpheus @Inspectorherm @SynthPotato @UlyssesSix If everyone had a critical mind sure, but that is not the case, the more popular something is the higher the amount of casual players it has, and most casual players interact with the medium superficially so their criticism doesn't amount to much.

@Inspectorherm @SynthPotato @UlyssesSix Wouldn’t a more popular game highly praised by millions make it objectively better than a more niche game for a specific audience since the more popular game is able to appeal to more and is up against more criticism?

@MhNomad97 @ActualAero Your JRPG friends do not much in that case lol. FF9 has a system almost exactly like the pictos, and if you want to create crazy equipment sinergies and combos there are a ton of games for that, like FF7 as op says. You ain't gonna get anything with parries tho that is true.

@ActualAero Loved the picto system and was so ready to play more jrpgs after hearing e33 doesn't do too much special that the genre doesn't already do. My disappointment to learn from my jrpg friends that you really ain't gonna get this shit much elsewhere was so bad lol

I’m not gonna write a whole review tweet for Expedition 33. There’s things I like & dislike as with every game but that style of discussion is never respectful on this app anymore What I do want to highlight tho is one aspect I really loved and how it made this game really fun for me even as someone who sucks with this style of gameplay and maybe it might encourage some others who feel similarly to still give it a try as well What I’m referring to is the character gear customization. While the combat of this game is turn-based, there are action prompts for when you attack & defend. Defending against enemies lets you press a button at the right time to either dodge an attack or parry it. Both make you take 0 damage but parries reward you with 1 AP which encourages you to do them much more so you can have a lot of AP ready for your powerful skills when it’s your turn to attack after but the problem is I FUCKING SUCK at parrying In all the games I’ve played that have parry mechanics I usually just don’t do them because I’m so bad at getting the timing right. It’s one of the reasons I’ll prob never play a FromSoft game as while I’m sure they’re masterpieces I just know I’d never be able to finish one with how unforgiving they can be for not doing the parries So with E33 when I started it and I saw how much the parries were incentivized I was worried for how it would be for me but this game’s incredible gear customization turned that around for me completely. There are pieces of gear called pictos which give you certain effects and you can turn them into luminas that can carry these effects passively without even needing them equipped. This allowed for so much customization that I was able to have a ton of fun even as someone who sucks at what the gameplay was intended to be Eventually I found a picto called energizing pain or something where it said “Stop earning 1 AP on perfect parries, earn 1 AP every time you get hit instead.” I immediately thought wait this is perfect for me cause I'm getting fucking smacked by everything anyway and I suck at parrying to begin with 😭 But because of that I was able to have all my characters rack up AP even without parrying and pull off the cool abilities I wanted to do in battles. And because there’s so many pictos & luminas the builds you can make with your characters can be exceptionally powerful and creative. There were a few where when a character dies it applies certain buffs to your other party members or status to the enemy and also one called auto-death where the character immediately dies as soon as the battle starts. I later got one called second chance where you can be revived after a death so I thought about combining them and then I had my party member immediately die, give the crazy buffs and status and then come back and pulling off stuff like that was just insanely satisfying and felt so rewarding It’s probably now one of my favorite gear customization systems I’ve played in an RPG, up there with something like all the crazy materia builds and combos you can do in Final Fantasy 7 So in conclusion even if you’re someone like me who may be discouraged with trying Expedition 33 because of the parrying or combat, the customization lets you be extremely creative and come up with so many fun ideas that I would recommend giving it a try just for this alone and I definitely would love to see it in more RPGs in the future as well

@D4Paladin @iRobotFighter If you do decide to build a character as a tank or a healer, it's obviously suboptimal and feels like a bandaid for being bad at parrying/dodging, which doesn't feel good at all. Parrying is clearly the cornerstone of the combat, and I love it, but it's clearly not the same as FF

@D4Paladin @iRobotFighter It is very changed from those games because the parry being there discourages you from building any character as a healer or a tank, and this is obviously something the devs knew because the characters have far fewer defensive skills than offensive ones.

@Pacifist_Elk I meant that the pacing doesn't get good until post Stormblood, as I said it can be exhausting to get there but I still think the game is enjoyable despite of that. And I agree, pacing doesn't need to be bad, but for some reason MMO games seem to struggle with this.

@Racsoman7 @MrOwlstanding Stormblood didn't even exist when I last played the game so saying "It doesn't get good until a future expansion after you stopped playing" isn't compelling at all. The pacing doesn't need to be bad. It being bad is either a creative choice or a creative failure.
