it really says so much about path dependency and institutional design that the fact that property taxes are often paid with your mortage payment means that people think of property taxes as part of the mortgage per se

What people who want to cancel property taxes are really advocating for is higher sales taxes and higher income tax The burden of both those is disproportionately carried by young, working families at the height of their income and consumption stage in life

@devahaz Most of the bread in europe is in a bakery/cafe where people walk up to and eat right there. The walkability in every city and town means very few people store stale bread at home.

Truly, if you believe paying taxes could ever benefit you then you’re the one that was hoodwinked. The rest of us argued correctly that the government should stop taking our money so we could more efficiently use it to pay for wants and needs like fugging adults.
Rushi@rushicrypto

I will never understand how so many of y'all were hoodwinked into believing the government should not use the money YOU PAY IN TAXES to create a social safety net that benefits YOU.

@Ragamuffine2 @atograisse @MattZeitlin Pretty sure he still pays property tax to Hawaii on his 98% share of Lanai, though Hawaii has the lowest effective property taxes of the states. Maybe they could discourage such hoarding by raising their property taxes!

@MattZeitlin We get rid of property taxes. You buy the property you now have your own "territory" the govt can't influence or levy demands to contribute. Rich foreigners now go an buy as much land as possible and own the majority of the territories. Good job you brought back monarchies.

The US deficit is now $39 trillion dollars. But the US population is also huge, 349,000,000 people. So if they all paid $112 then the deficit would be paid off. Why aren't they doing this??

OK, I misread. My bad. There are many ways to declare what happens to your portfolio, almost too many to track unless you're a tax lawyer. (I'm not, I just pay way too much in taxes.) Taxing unrealized gains a foolish policy guaranteed to kill investment / reinvestment. Using that policy in a extreme example you could tax a lottery player for the unrealized gain of their lottery ticket. They could win $55mil so we'll charge them taxes until they don't win then we'll refund the taxes charges.

@Ragamuffine2 @averros271828 @MAGAMAHACindy No you don't. The IRS taxes the realized gains, not all gains. BC it's not a real gain until you sell it. To you own a 401k, Stocks, Crypto? If so unless you sell an asset you're not taxed on a gain, or a loss for that matter. The chaos what you described would crash society.

@Ragamuffine2 @averros271828 @MAGAMAHACindy Can voluntarily elect to do this. You're not required to use Mark to Market. Large traders do this to take advantage of the tax codes, not because the government forces you to use this method. It's pretty obvious you don't manage any stocks.

How stupid do you have to be to think that once a billionaire tax is implemented, the government will declare 'mission accomplished' and leave other wealthy people alone? Remember: Anyone making more than $34,000 a year is in the global 1%. Tax them until it hurts.
Karol Markowicz@karol

The California billionaire wealth confiscation tax has enough signatures to get on the ballot. People were wondering why billionaires bailed on the state before the idea even made the ballot. They didn't trust their state's voters and they were right.
