Nolan's "The Odyssey" is a box office flop. It cost roughly $250M to produce and they spent another $100M on marketing. It hasn't even made $350M at the global box office yet. Lmfaooooo

@MemeOfSteel_ Moana- did they give us any reason to believe the live action is better than the original? Supergirl- just wasn’t that good. Give us a more interesting villain.

What did The Odyssey and Project Hail Mary get right that Moana and Supergirl didn't, even with similar budgets?

I still can’t get over the absurdity of having a Greek man speak in Greek to an Indian who can’t understand him but then says ‘we’re Greeks from Ithaca’. What was Nolan thinking?

Christopher Nolan says he’s terrified of directing a rom-com because comedy gives you nowhere to hide. If audiences don’t understand one of his films, he can think, “They just don’t get it,” but if a comedy doesn’t make people laugh, it’s obvious it didn’t work. I think doing a rom-com would be incredibly difficult. I love those. I love watching those movies, but no. I think comedy, like people who direct comedy, people who do comedy, I think that’s one of the hardest things in the world. To make people laugh that way, particularly the risk-taking. When you make a film, if I show a film to people and maybe they don’t respond to bits of it, I’m like, “Ah, they don’t get it,” you know, whatever. There’s no hiding behind that when you do comedy. So I would be terrified of doing anything like that. [laughs]

How did Menelaus make it back to Sparta before Odysseus? Both left Troy at the same time, yet Menelaus returned years earlier while Odysseus spent a decade struggling to reach Ithaca. Was it simply because Poseidon singled Odysseus out, or was Menelaus also making better decisions along the way? What’s the biggest reason for the difference?

@Eval_00 Just the fact that Nolan chose not to show the Sirens, one of the most notable and memorable parts of Homer's The Odyssey is a giant FAIL... One of the many reasons why this movie is definitely a 5.0 to 5.8. Way too many misses.

@maximusbillz @DrewPavlou Not once you see it. Sinon was a commoner that a lord paid to take his son’s place in a draft. He symbolized the weak and marginalized that got dragged into the war.

Okay, I've seen The Odyssey twice now, and I've been thinking a lot about it. I think there's actually a secret right wing chud core to the movie. Odysseus's response to a bunch of uninvited guests worming their way into his home and abusing his hospitality is to just brutally slaughter them in a massacre which is portrayed as completely justified and righteous. Yes, Nolan made a few small woke casting decisions which took up like 5 minutes of screen time. Then, while everyone was distracted debating Elliot Page and Lupita Nyong'o, Nolan managed to smuggle this extremely chud reactionary ending into the movie. Maybe Nolan doesn't even realise how much of a chud he was being with this - it could legitimately be a subliminal or unconscious act. I remember Slavoj Zizek complained that the Nolan Batman films subliminally endorsed the logic of the War on Terror years - that a kind of unconscious reactionary ideology permeated the films. Maybe the same thing happened here. Nolan said that the film is actually all about the importance of welcoming strangers. But the corollary to this is that when strangers abuse their welcome they can be summarily expelled with massive force and violence. Isn't this basically the most chud message possible? Odysseus was basically 1000 times more brutal than ICE but he's portrayed as a righteous hero regaining his masculinity and saving his family. I am not endorsing violence or saying that we should be inspired by this. But I am just saying that it complicates efforts to portray the film as completely woke. Odysseus is ultimately exiled, so I guess the slaughter is still presented as a crime he must answer for. But he and Penelope are shown heading out into the unknown West, smiling, happy, fulfilling their long held dreams. In this regard it's not much of a punishment. He kills all his enemies, installs his favoured son as king, then rides off into the sunset. The last lines are literally: ''Civilisation will rise again. A new dawn will break over the darkened world, When our mistakes will once again be forgotten.'' After almost a century of Westerners cowering in self-hatred, endlessly interrogating their own supposed evil, is Nolan saying that the West will rise to fully assert itself once again? I actually really like the movie. I think it is genuinely not possible to completely typecast it as fully left or right. Obviously some of the casting decisions were woke for the sake of being woke, but there remains a right wing chud impulse that courses through the film, as it does through so much of Nolan's other work. Possibly operating on the level of the unconscious, beyond anything Nolan himself might intuit. These are my preliminary draft thoughts - will publish my full review tomorrow

@MattHodgkinson4 Okay... Answer this pls... Why? Why not do Achilles? It makes far more sense with the underworld scene. The king of corpses line would have landed so well and added real stake to the film, same with his mother. Page was not bad though but it could have been much more

Elliot (Ellen) Page, visibly having difficulty holding herself up with fake armor. Like watching a toddler struggling through the desert. If Christopher Nolan wanted to go woke, he could’ve at least given Ronda Rousey a haircut, and casted her as Achilles instead. Part of story telling, is that you can walk the line between fiction and the tangible world. In what universe does a 100lb, tiny, and sickly female become the center of Homer’s Iliad, the center of a 10 year Trojan War, where he defeated over 20 Trojan cities, defeated the Trojan champion Hector in single combat, and slayed both the Amazon Queen Penthesilea and the Ethiopian King Memnon? It’s not even remotely believable. In typical Hollywood fashion, Nolan will carry this movie’s box office performance with his name and resume alone. Another cheap payday. Maybe they won’t see the financial implications instantly, but this is yet another reason why Hollywood fatigue is real, and the industry as a whole, is in serious decline. Boycott The Odyssey.

Watched Odysseus in IMAX as someone who barely watches movies. The animation and sound design? Absolute cinema. But hated hearing "Dad." You're telling me we're in ancient Greece and nobody could find a more mythical way to address a father?
