Greenland is in the process to move towards independence from Denmark who has largely prevented development or immigration.
Even without becoming part of the US, it could join the USMCA and have a huge amount of development.
That said, if the US really wanted to “buy” it, they would not write the check to Denmark.
They could in theory give 1 million dollars to every Greenland resident if they voted to secede from Denmark and join the US as a territory or state.
As the population of Greenland is only 50k, this would be $50 billion or so.
In practice the US can’t give them money directly to vote a certain way but could promise to invest the $50 in infrastructure, which would have similar economic benefits to the people currently living there.
