Is the Broselow tape reliable in children? The short answer is no. We analyzed >200,000 kids and found that nearly 1 in 7 the Broselow under-estimated kids weights by >20%. Of note, we are not the first authors to question the reliability of this tool. However, this is the largest analysis to date. So what methods should we use? Previous systematic reviews have assessed this question. The best option is to get an actual weight. Most ED's have resuscitation beds that can measure a weight, so if you have that, use it. However, that may not be feasible in the prehospital setting. The next best option is to ask the parents how much the kid weighs. Previous prospective studies have found this method reliable. Does a BVM with PEEP valve confer better preoxygenation?
