MOTHER MARY is a pretentious mess. Beautifully shot, well-acted – no story. *SPOILERS AHEAD* Famous pop star Anne Hathaway pays an unexpected visit to her estranged friend and possible lover, renowned fashion designer Michaela Coel, and asks her to design a new dress for an upcoming concert. Michaela eventually says yes and makes her a pretty nice dress. The end. Oh yeah, there's a ghost, sort of, but it's not the spirit of any particular dead person. It's a metaphor for, I dunno, let's go with trauma. In any case, they perform an exorcism of sorts – and five minutes later it works though they're kinda making up the rules as they go along. Again, this is not a story. Do they resolve their differences at the end? Not really. Chances are they'll never see each other again. But here's the part I really want to complain about: The entire thing is predicated on Anne suffering a catastrophic injury after falling off a platform during a concert in her high heels. Keep in mind she's playing an incredibly rich and famous singer performing at a massive arena and somehow the crew didn't think to give her a safety harness. I've seen Lady Gaga fly down from the roof at the Super Bowl and at no time was she in any physical danger. Beyonce had a mishap in a prop car on wires and she was totally fine. Why? Because she was strapped in. Yes, it's only a movie. No, it's a major plot point. If there's some plot hole in your script you hope you can get away with or no one will notice, you can't and they will. Audiences are willing to suspend their disbelief for just about anything as long as it is consistent with the rules of that world. Taylor Swift is never ever gonna fall off a platform during a show and I know this because I watched all six parts of the END OF AN ERA documentary and loved every minute of it WHICH I WILL MAKE NO APOLOGIES FOR A24 can be hit or miss. This was a big swing and a miss for me. Let's hope BACKROOMS delivers

@HwoodScrptReadr @fritchbeetle When I was still studying screenwriter, I visited LA in 2018 for a writer's festival. At that time the hope was that streaming companies would give a boost on the sale of spec scripts, thus changing the landscape... well, no further comments.

The spec market is broken and it has been for a long time. Maybe I shouldn't say this because I'm putting myself out of a job but fuck it. For years and years Hollywood has been taking the "monkeys with typewriters" approach – and I apologize in advance for calling anyone a simian. The strategy sounds good on paper. Make everyone work for free in the hopes that you'll strike gold. But it hasn't worked out that way, has it? Writing takes time. Especially when you're first starting out. Everyone's first script is shit. Who has time to write all day? Trust fund kids, mostly. Why are there so many movies and TV shows about rich people? It's not the only reason why, but it is A reason. The rest of us have day jobs. And was we get older and want a family there are even fewer hours in the day for writing. So what's the solution? Here's a radical proposal: Back in the olden days you had writers on staff. In some ways that was a bad deal because you didn't own your own material. But if a studio buys your spec you don't own it anymore then either. What that system offered was a salary. A steady paycheck is almost a prerequisite for writers to do their best work. It's really hard to be at your most creative when most of your time and energy goes toward worrying how to pay the bills. This could be an opportunity to foster young talent. It's not that different from the long-lost days of development deals and first looks. That was a cash cow for independent producers – and a select few writers who were also producers – that has largely if not totally gone away. Let's making writing a middle class job again. What we have now is a handful of writers at the top who are making the big bucks and everyone else who's making both diddly and squat. It's simply not an efficient allocation of resources. It might result in smaller paydays but it would benefit more people than it will harm. Yes, I know all of this sounds hopelessly naive and will almost certainly never happen, but throwing it out there anyway. Tell me I'm wrong in the comments.

@For_Film_Fans 5 years from now the landscape to make a movie 🎬 will be completely different from what we used to know. Like the era of selling a spec script like it was in the 90's no longer exists

BEN AFFLECK on why Hollywood is dying. You need a MINIMUM of $25m to make the movie, another $25m to market it — so that's $50m straight off — and then (for showing the film) Theater’s take 50% too. So a $25m movie needs to make $75m just to break even.

I'm sure that AI can do this work faster and cheaper than a human being, but can it do it better? I doubt it. If there was some mathematical or data-driven formula that could guarantee a surefire hit we would have found it already and no movie would ever lose money

RIP the one and only Chuck Norris.🕊 I'm so grateful I got to work with this legend, twice.🙏 First in the movie Sidekicks in 1992, and then in 1994 in an episode of his long-running series Walker, Texas Ranger, and he was so generous to me. I was 19, and in the story I was a teenage mother whose baby was stolen. Fun fact: In the final fight sequence, I was supposed to just be a damsel in distress that Chuck saves from the bad guy. But on set, Chuck suggested that my character get in on the action, which was SO much fun. I'll never forget that little gift. And I bet I'm just one of countless others with a story like that.Sending prayers and comfort to those who loved him, including his wonderful brother, Aaron Norris, who I got to know as a director on both of those projects. . . Some legends are so much bigger than life, it doesn't seem like theirs should ever end. Rest in peace, my friend. 🙏🙏🙏
